Hi Experts
We are working on a OS / DB migration requirement where our SAP ECC system needs to be moved from AIX 6.1 / Oralce 10g to Windows & SQL 2016
My query is both source OS & DB are currently not supported. I understand we have to perform few SAP application SP & kernel upgrades. But please advise if we have to perform any OS / DB upgrade before migration !!!
Kindly advise. Thanks!!
Regards
Anand
First check note 2201059 - Release planning for Microsoft SQL Server 2016 for the required minimum SAP Netweaver Support Package Stacks (SPSs) for SQL Server 2016. Here is what the note says: If your system is running on an SPS lower than the one required above, you have to apply the minimum required SPS before upgrading/migrating to SQL Server 2016.
You do not need to upgrade the OS/DB if you are planning to migrate from AIX/Oracle to Windows/MSSQL. You just need to get the SPS's updated and start the migration.

Hi Anand,
Upgrading SP and kernel to latest is general recommendation from SAP to avoid any issues. It is must in upgrade scenarios but in migration scenarios it may not be necessary to update SP but kernel update is recommended. Howeve if the guide/SAP note explicitly recommends you to update based on SWPM release/SAP release you must update SP as well.
You plan your migration with help of SAP support sessions which are free of cost. https://support.sap.com/en/offerings-programs/support-services/os-db-migration-check.html .
Also refer the migration guide at https://help.sap.com/viewer/nwguidefinder
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Pradeep
