The variant Configuration will not be used in Repetitive manufactruing generally as REM is using simple BOM, Very simple bom like Cup, Package and Paper prodcuts... and simple process. And few companies will be using REM with variant configuration as it will be customised through many transaction.
Mainly VC is used for MTO and If you want to use for MTS you have to go for Material VAriant where you will fix certain characteristics as fixed and no value changes its also fixed.
