We would like to track the people that from our side are assigned to a customer in different roles. Some of these are pre-sales and sales people other post-sales or even executive contacts.
When would you use a Relationship and when a Partner Function?
I believe you are talking about contact person relationship. Relationships are end dated but not deleted. In a scenario, where there are multiple pre-sales contacts assigned to a customer, like I have a pre-sales contact P1 for Q1 and P2 for Q2. I would go with a relationship. When P2 becomes the contact you can end date P1. You now have a log of pre-sales contact who were assigned to that customer.
In CRM context, every partner function should be assigned to a relationship category.
