Upgrading sybase 11.0.1 to sybase 17

I am in the of upgrading my old sybase 11.0.1 to version 17

i am not clear how can I upgrade using the current update in SAP about the licensing types and the different versions.

My organization is set up is as below:

1. we have 51 users in the office and 5 *34 users in the 34 vessels.

2. we have marine application which is installed for all the users and we are using the client server environment

3. This application is linked to Sybase thru ODBC

4. we are using 2 product keys one for office and the other for vessels.

5. We have one server in the office for managing the application where the sybase is installed and connected to each client.

6. similarly also same done in the vessels.

7. Now when we are planning to upgrade, I am confused which license type and which version should be best for my organization.

for my preference, it seems advanced version with per device license is better. but I am confused.

Kindly i would request someone to advise from thier experience and expertise.

This is not a sales channel. If you need specific licensing questions answered, you really need to walk through the specifics of your licensing with sales. Please note that SQL Anywhere 11 did not have a "unlimited server and clients" installation licensing model.

At a high level (based on your last usage description)

You will need a license for *each* server that is deployed.

If you want to allow unlimited users, that license will need to be a "core" license. If you want to use all cores on a machine, you will need 4-8 licenses per deployment based on point 7.

For the number of users, I believe that you would find the named user license a good fit also.

On ship, you would need between 1 and 2 licensed per ship depending on the number of client workstations (the ships with 7 need at least 7 named users).

In the office, you will need 4-5 licenses minimum. If some servers host more than 5 named users, you will need additional licenses.

good day

this is still confusing for me.

I want to know the exact type of editions and license which needs to be used in the organization

I am putting forward the scenario again.

1. we are using the Sybase 11.0.1 currently

2. we have multiple servers and clients in the office.

3. we need to be able to install 'n' number of servers and clients( i.e., unlimited clients and server)

4. There are two sites a) Office site b) Ship site

5. The office has 4- 5 servers and 51 clients.

6. The ship has servers mainly live and the backup server plus the client work stations of around 5 -7

7. All our clients and servers are 4 - 8 cores

8. We need to have a sybase edition and license type which will have set up for unlimited server and clients installation.

9. Now the question is, based on my above briefing, kindly advise exactly what type of license and edition should I use for both the sites.

Hello Rajan,

There are two editions available for SQL Anywhere now, as you noticed.

https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/SQLANY/SAP+SQL+Anywhere+Editions

If you will not use SQL Anywhere's HA option,

https://help.sap.com/viewer/61ecb3d4d8be4baaa07cc4db0ddb5d0a/17.0/en-US/8137e6fd6ce21014bf5c9b3b99e9...

Read-only scale out option, In-memory mode, FIPS Security, or UNIX platform,

then, workgroup, Edge edition maybe enough for your use case.

However, please note that workgroup, Edge edition is not purchasable directly from SAP. Only purchasable through in-direct channel or SAP Store.

https://www.sapstore.com/solutions/99017/SAP-SQL-Anywhere-%28v17%29

Under SAP License Agreement, both editions have two license model:

1) to count the number of physical cores that SQL Anywhere server actually use, and clients are unlimited

or

2) to count the number of "named users" accessing SQL Anywhere server.

Workgroup, Edge edition includes 5 users. Advanced Edition includes 25 users.

(* There is a license called Database and Sync Client, which counts number of client "devices" but it is a little exceptional.)

If you have valid support contract, provably your support contract includes right to upgrade to newer version and you would not have to purchase new licenses.

Hope it helps.
