ALE - Application Link Enabling

As part of ALE, business processes are distributed across different IT systems in your own company. The systems are physically separated from each other and the communication takes place between different Logical Systems (LS). A logical system is a specific software such as a CRM system. In SAP, a logical system is assigned to a client and has its own system name. In SAP itself, logical systems can be defined using transaction BD54, as the following figure shows.

EDI - Electronic Data Interchange

If data is exchanged with other companies, this is known as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Instead of exchanging IDocs directly, the data is first translated to a common exchange format, a so-called EDI format. Known EDI formats include UN / EDIFACT, ANSI ASC X12, VDA, etc. as well as the corresponding derivatives and sub-standards. An EDI converter is used for the translation between IDocs and the EDI format. When using electronic data exchange, no logical system is used in the SAP system. Instead, partners are defined. These partners can be, for example, customers or suppliers. The settings for the individual partners are also called partner profiles and configured in transaction WE60.

Maybe it helps a little bit.
