Jamie,

The most first step is to make FULL back-up of your existing system:

  • CMS Database
  • Audit Database
  • FileStore Directory
  • Data Directory
  • If using AD Auth, also backup Tomcat WebApps Config folder & Tomcat Java Parameters

I would also suggest going either BI 4.2 SP2 &/or BI 4.1 SP8, they are the most stable service pack releases, process as follow:

  • Make sure you have at-least 20-30Gigs free on BI4 install directory
  • Prior to starting make sure Administrator Password is complex
  • SIA MUST be running
  • Start the BI 4.2.2 &/or BI 4.1.8 Platform Update
  • Follow the screens
  • Install any other additional add-ons (Explorer, Lumira BIP, Design Studio BIP, ..)

Ajay

Hi Jamie,

You can do an upgrade with all the server Running, The installer itself will stop and start the services.

Just to be on safe side.

Please take backup of

1) Filestore

2) CMS Dtabase

3) BIAR file of the Reports

Wish you all the Luck

Regards,

Subhasish

Why only SP5? There are higher SP released for 4.1 or even 4.2 SP3 is available with more features and bg fixes. BI4 SP5 is 1.5 years old release.  i would suggest to go with SP8 on 4.1 or 4.2 SP3.

If you plan to upgrade to 4.1 latest SP8, you need to stop all the services except CMS, do the upgrade.

If you have plans to upgrade 4.2, it is not necessary to shut down the services while install is caching. Check below links for upgrade steps.
