SAP BODS licenses

Former Member

Hi All,

Unfortunately I do not know how to verify which architecture I have but I know that some of Dataservices components is installed with SAP BI Platform on the Server1 and some other components (Job Server, Access Server, Designer) on the Server2. When I upgraded BODS to higher version I installed upgrade package in both servers so probably it is not distributed environment.

Server1 have for example 4 CPU's and Server2 have 2 CPU's. What about license? It should be purchase for 2 CPU's where I have main DS components installed? What if I would like to move components from Server1 (if I should purchase a license for this server too) to Server 2? Is it possible? How to do this?

Thank you for help.

Regards,

Konrad

Hi Konrad,

It is HIGHLY recommended you separate your Data Services from your BI Platform, and instead install Information Platform Services (IPS) to provide a CMS/CMC for DS/IS. This is for the following reasons:

1. If installed with the BI Platform, DS will consume BI user licenses; however DS doesn't need BI user licenses. By using IPS you'd avoid this. Please see KB article 2176896.

Further license related information can be found here: Understanding EIM Licensing - Enterprise Information Management - SCN Wiki

2. The BI Platform is patched at a different rate than the IPS Platform. DS is first certified with IPS before it is ever certified with BI. In fact, a release of the BI Platform may not be certified for MONTHS after an updated version of IPS. It is possible to patch BI (for example, to fix a Webi issue) and inadvertently break your Data Service/Information Steward deployment.

3. Using BI Platform for your CMC instead of IPS can turn into a huge problem later because if you run into a issue/bug, you would need to convert your deployment from the BI Platform to IPS, and then try to recreate the issue. If the problem exists, then there is an escalation path to Development.

Cheers!
Julie

Hi Julie,

Thank you for explanation. What about licensing of infrastructure which I have? I will think about moving APS and Management console in the meantime of course.

Julie,

What about IPS licensing? Should I have another license for IPS for Dataservices? Which features should I choose during installation? I just want to install only options which we have to install for DS, not all of them.

No separate license needed for IPS. Use installIPS.exe (not setup.exe) for installation and it won't prompt for a license key.

Hi Dirk,

Sorry for correcting this, but as far as I know, for IPS above 4.2 version a license key is required for IPS. It is however free to get it for your "BODS" installation.

Bogdan

That's not exactly true, either. See SAP IPS 4.2 license key? | SCN for the complete and correct explanation.

Oh...I missed that. Thank you Dirk.

Hi Konrad,

I'm not really sure what you are referring to when you say "infrastructure which I have"? If you are referencing your BI Platform, your best bet is to post those questions to the BI Platform discussion forum, or create a SAP Support Incident using component XX-SER-LIKEY-BOJ.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,

When I say "Infrastructure which I have" I mean that some core components was installed in one server but APS services and DS management console in second. Which CPU's (from which server) should I count for licensing?

Hello,

Regarding a license key for IPS, Dirk is correct. Please see the link he provided:

SAP IPS 4.2 license key? | SCN

As far as the IPS installation goes, taking the defaults should be fine. You can later add/remove services from the EIMAdaptiveProcessingServer (used by Data Services/Information Steward) via the IPS's CMC, depending upon your needs.

I would HIGHLY recommend you read through the SAP DS and IS Master Guide:

http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sbods42/en/ds_is_42_master_en.pdf

Also make sure you install a version of IPS which is compatible with your version of Data Services. It is recommended you go to the latest version of Data Services, which is DS 4.2 SP7 P1:

Hello,

Your best bet is to create a SAP Support Incident using component XX-SER-LIKEY-BOJ to talk with the licensing team.

Thank you,
Julie

Agree with you Julie. Instead of replying in this thread its better to raise a support ticket with SAP Support team.

You can raise a support ticket with SAP and also get in touch with your account manager.

Hi,

It should be one installation number with different Hardware keys for Each SAP component.

Please register your system with installation number, Hardware key and SID in service market place and  generate the license.

Hope it would be helpful for you.

Hi,

DataSerives licensing is core-based so I just want to know how to count CPU's in architecture above. As I said Job Server, Access Server, Designer  are in Server2 and other components like APS Server and Management Console on Server1 (How could I check which components where are because I'm not sure).

If I have DS components divided by two servers is it possible to move from Server1 to Server2 wihout any problems?

Refer to the below thread. Check with your Account Manager for licenses.

E.g. DS licensing is core-based. If you have a Quad Core CPU processor then it will be 4 licenses. SAP will charge you for license on Production Server.

But I do not know for which server should be license purchase. For server1 where I have some DS components only or Server2 where I have the main DS components.

Server 2 on which your Main DS components are installed. I assume this is the Production server for Data services

Just right. Server2 is the main Dataservices server but APS services (EIM) and management console are installed in server1 (this is the main BI platform server). It doesn't matter I think but I have to be sure.

If Server 1 has BOE components installed then that will be a separate license based on your processor type. Just verified this with one of my colleagues who is into Administration. As BO and BODS are two enterprise products you will require two separate licenses

If you still have any queries, please contact SAP Support team and they will guide you
