Unable to modify old reports in new version

Hi Community,

I am currently working with a customer who is having trouble modifying old reports.  Please see the description below:

"Here is what we have now.

Crystal Reports 2008 server and Crystal Reports 2008 on desktops. We also have Crystal Reports XI server. We have purchased new Windows 2012 servers running SQL 2012. We purchased SAP Crystal Reports 2013 with a 20 user license. We did a migration of the 2008 reports to the new 2013 version. We have also been opening and saving the XI reports to the 2013 version. We are now having issues with the migrated and saved reports. We are able to open them but we are not able to modify these reports.

When we open a report in Crystal Reports 2008 using the Enterprise connection that points to the new BO 4.1 install, we get the message below.    I also attached the image."

Any insight into what might be causing this is greatly appreciated!  Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Chris,

You need to keep in-mind that no vendor can make a product forward compatible, for that reason some rules to follow.

  • Crystal 2008 will ONLY work with BOE XI Related Server
  • Crystal 2013 will ONLY work with BI4.0 Related Server
  • You can NOT use Crystal 2008 to connect to NEWER BI4.x Server
  • You can open Crystal 2008 local saved reports with Crystal 2013 but still NOT connect to BO XI Server with Crystal 2013.
  • Same rule applies for Crystal 2016, it will only work with BI 4.2 Server.

Best practice for importing content from XI to BI 4.x is to use Upgrade Management Tool on BI 4.x.  This way the Crystal Reports 2008 will fully maintain their CUID when migrated to BI 4.x environment.

Only thing different when migrating content from BI 4.0 to BI 4.2, you would use Promotion Manager instead of UMT.  You would run Promotion Manager from BI 4.2 to pull content from BI 4.0

Ajay

Are you opening the reports which are already migrated to 2013 from Crystal 2008?

You should be opening from Crystal 2013.

It looks like they are using Crystal Server 2013 running on a new Windows 2012 server.  The report designers are running CR 2008 on their desktops.

They are trying to open the reports that have been migrated from CR 2008 to CR 2013.  They are also trying to open old CR XI reports that have been opened and saved to CR 2013 through the Enterprise.

I assume that the desktop folks just need to upgrade to 2013/2016, correct?
