Patching systems in a landscape seperately?

Hi Experts

I would like to ask a question about patching. My SAP Landscape consists of ECC, BI, SRM, PI and Enterprise Portal. When it comes to annual SAP patching we struggle to have resources available to test all systems in the landscape at the same time. So my question is can I patch one system at a time or do they all have to be done at once? For example, can I patch the SRM landscape only, so it's on newer patch levels and kernel etc while the other systems (ECC, BI, PI etc) are at the old levels? Is there any risk of functionality not working? Are there any systems that must be done together?

Many thanks in advance.

Justin.

There is no rule that you need to patch all the systems at the same time unless you are doing a release upgrade wherein the connected systems have some dependency. In that case you will need to do upgrade the connected systems as well. If you are upgrading the systems then you should use the UDA tool (Upgrade Dependency Analyzer) to identify any dependencies involved. In your case it appears to me that you are doing SP update on each system which shouldn't create any issues. If you want to identify any issues on the system to be patched due to the SP update then you can request for the SAP Side-Effects Report here

Hello Justin,

You can patch ECC/SRM and portal at a time and in next phases BW and PI.

Don't know how much portal functionality are you using, usually Portal and ECC have dependencies

due to ESS/MSS funcationality.

PI you can upgrade any time. In case message exchange in between ECC and SRM is happening through PI. You can patch at different time. If the communication is setup through RFC connections then there are sometime kernel dependencies.

Thanks,
