Upgrading / Migrating PI version and DB

Hello Everybody!

A customer wants to move from PI current DB (Oracle) to HANA or Sybase ASE and, also, current PI version (7.11) to 7.4. The idea is to keep dual-stack installation because the core, and most important, interface is made with ccBPM.

In the beginning the idea was only to upgrade PI version (I also posted the question here previously) but now they added the DB to the plan.

My question is: which is the best way to achieve this? Is it possible to install the new DB, copy PI, and after that, do the PI upgrade?

Or it would be more advisable to (afther the new DB installation) do a PI migration? If yes, which would be the best way to do the migration? Exporting/Importing SLD/IR/ID or any migration tool?

Thanks a lot!

  Juan.

Hello Juan,

Since your going with Dual stack only, exporting and  importing should be fine.

Hello Juan,

The answer to your question lies also in the number of interfaces running on the PI Server.

  • If the number of Interfaces is low -> then a fresh installation on the target DB followed by the migration of Interfaces using a Export / Import makes sense.
  • If the number of Interfaces is high -> then the PI migration effort and the associated effort for testing of connections etc can be high and you would need to look at that as a factor.

Also, if your DB version changes, then as your have rightly mentioned, you need to do a Heterogeneous System copy of the source PI system and thereafter perform the Upgrade. As you would need to do this, I assume your hostname changes and this would also involve some amount of testing effort.

All in all as the system copy + upgrade is a 2 step approach with an added downtime, performing a Fresh Installation + Migration of Interfaces makes more sense. Also when performing this migration, I would suggest to use a Classical to ICO Migration using the Integration Directory MIgration Toolkit for non CCBPM Interfaces and only use the classical configuration for a ccBPM Based Interface. Every customer is different and so is the context but in principal if you need to mandatorily do a DB platform change, a fresh installation + migration makes more sense.

Bhavesh

Hi Bhavesh, thanks for your response.

We have an average of 13 interfaces, so we'll consider the approach of the fresh instalattion. Also I'll look into the ICO Migration tool.

Thanks again.

Juan.

Hello Juan,

IF am not wrong,ICO migration tool is required in case if you migrate to single stack.

Hello Raghuraman,

I guess Bhavesh is just suggesting to use that tool only to improve non ccBPM interfaces.
