Handling Unit in a Non HU managed IM location

I have 2 locations - one is IM-HU (HU01) and other one is just IM (IM01) .

I have a HU in HU01 and I want to move it to IM01. I can do it in 2 ways

1. unpack and move it , so the HU is lost

2. just move it , so the HU is intact even in IM01

question is, if I don't unpack and just move it to IM01 which is not HU managed location, I am still able to perform so many HU related transactions with the HU in IM location. so what is the real advantage of a HU managed location if you can do things in a non hu location using HU number..

Hi,

If it's a HUM location, you can only make the stock posting if you specify the handling unit. It not, system will not create the material document directly but will create a delivery to assign the HU. HUM enables the to control inventory management using packed stock in storage location level.

This ensures that the HUM stock is same with the IM stock in storage location level.

If it's not a HUM storage location, sure, we can still process the HUs. In this case, we cannot know if the stock in HU physical exists and if the stock is still valid. There is no guarantee that the data is correct or not.

when i go to mmbe and check stock in IM location, it does show what stock is on HU.I dont see any discrepancy as of now even if I have HU in non HUM location..

I am still not understanding the rationale of why SAP allows HU's in a non HUM IM location? in other way what would be a business scenario where someone wants to have a HU number in a non HUM IM location?

Hi Rege,

In MMBE, please goto: menu path >> environment >> Handling units. Here, you may see the stocks in the HUM location are in HUs.

In HUM location, it allows system control the stock with HUs in the storage location level. That would make sure the HU stock is equal to IM stock. This is also why transaction HUDIFF can be used only in HUM location but cannot be used in the non-HUM location.

For reason why HUs are allowed also in the non-HUM location. Actually, HU can be used both in non-HUM location and HUM location. In non-HU location, for some business purpose, the stock should be packed. There is no restriction that non-HUM location cannot use HU.

Actually,  HUM location is to ensure the IM stock can also be controlled in HU level. It's not that HU can only be used in the HUM location but not in non-HUM location.
