Apply SPS 14 for Solman 7.1 with SUM 1.0SP17 following Note 2184647 documentation

Hello,

I am trying to apply SPS 14 of Solman 7.1 with SUM 1.0SP17, as documented in Note 218467.

The notes specifies the following:

###

For updating both stacks independently, use the Software Update Manager (SUM) version SP 9

(patch 2) or higher for updating the Java stack and transactions SPAM or SAINT, resp., for

updating the ABAP stack.

Regardless of the order in which you run these tools,

you have to apply the same stack configuration file (XML) to update the system consistently.

To update the Java stack of the system using SUM, follow the process described in

chapter 'Running the Software Update Manager' of the SUM guide

(see link to this guide above).

However, you must use this special command to start SUM which ensures that SUM will

only update the Java stack of the system:

On Windows: <DRIVE>:\usr\sap\<sapsid>\SUM\STARTUP javaonly<RETURN>

On UNIX: /usr/sap/<sapsid>/SUM/STARTUP javaonly<RETURN>

On IBM i: ADDLIBLE SAPSLT<RETURN> STARTSUM OPTIONS('javaonly')<RETURN>

###

But it is not possible to run STARTUP javaonly with SUM 1.0SP17.

How should I proceed to update only the java stack with SUM 1.0SP17?

Regards,

Hi Benoit,

First of all, I would always recommend to update both stacks with SUM in normal way.

In any case you can try the below :

I can try this one has it seems to be what I would like to perform.

As my process are running, which process should I kill before re running

"STARTUP confighostagent SID"?

I would say all sapup and saphostagent, but I am not very familiar, with restarting SUM 🙂

Have you ever tried this setting?

Where have found this information?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi Benoit,

I am not sure upto which point which you have reached with SUM. So my recommendation would be to reset the current run. Extract the SUM tool again and then start from scratch with above steps.
Resetting the upgrade is explained in guide.

By the way, it is not required to stop the hostagent.

If you have already started the SUM, then check if there are any SAPup or slp process running.

ps -ef | grep SAPup
ps -ef | grep slp

This should help.

Hello,

It has worked.

Where did you get this ABAP=false tip?

I have searched in the market place.

But I have not found documentation on it.

Hi Benoît,

Maybe you'd can try to open an incident to SAP within component BC-UPG-RDM about the special command to update java stack only in SLM since the command provided in note 2184647 does not work.

Ning

Hi Benoît,

I find part of the information although it is for DB2 on z/OS.

Hello Schmid,

SUM SP17 guide doesn't talk about such option. If you would like to update Java stack only, please provide stack XML of Java stack only and observe the behavior. However, any reason you want to apply SPS14 only on Java stack of Solution Manager?

Thanks.

The reason I would like to patch only java, is because I have already applied the SPS on the abap stack with spam as documented in Note 218467.

Could you be more precise on how I should proceed to do:

"please provide stack XML of Java stack only and observe the behavior"

Firstly it is strongly recommended to apply SPS patches using SUM tool only. This way you can play safe and take help of SAP Support in case of unexpected issues.

However, only option you have now is to let SUM assume that yours is Java only system and use the Java SUM url. Not sure if this would really work.

Have you not generated stack XML for ABAP SPS?

What is the error you get when you open the dual stack URL?

Note 2184647, does not states that " it is strongly recommended to apply SPS patches using SUM tool only".

It clearly states that both are supported without any strong recommendation.

Could you provide your sources that states this point for SPS 14 on Solman 7.1?

How are you sure that "let SUM assume that yours is Java only system" is the only option?

Before progressing with the dual stack error, I would like to know the correct way of applying the SPS 14.

Applying the recommended and supported is the best approach.

There is no need the genererate an xml stack file because SAP has included one stack file in the SPS DVD.

You will have to generate a stack XML for your Java SPS and use it in SUM. So please generate one try using it in the dual stack URL. If it doesn't work, you may want to try using SUM SP9 patch2 as stated in the note you referred.

Dear Schmid,

I haven't upgraded any system using sum sp17 till now but as per the sum sp16 patch 4, once you start the sum process It will show you three link 1) dual 2) abap 3) java .

If you use below java link, you can update your java stack.

http://<hostname>:1128/lmsl/sumjava/<SID>/index.html.

Using the following url reports the following:

###
The current SL Common GUI version is designed for Java-only systems, while the detected topology of your SAP system is Dual-stack.
You have to abort the execution of this SUM instance and afterward start the GUI version for Dual-stack.
For more information, see SAP Note 927637.

You can start SL Common GUI for Dual-stack.

###
Therefore the SUM does not want to go further.

SUM detects usage types from profile parameter " system/type". Though its out of the way but you can try to use system/type=J and try starting SUM using Java only URL.

Have ever performed this option, on your own, in the past?

Would you know if this is supported by SAP?

Not really. Applying SPS without SUM tool, itself isn't supported and recommended. You might have to try work arounds only or raise an OSS message to SAP Support.

Thanks.

Please read the note 2184647 to realize that it is supported in the case of Solman 7.1 SPS 14.

If it is not supported, could you please provide me the SAP note that clearly states it?

It is supported but SAP recommends to use SUM tool for SP stack patching. You may use SPAM/SAINT for lesser patches.

Please refer: 1803986 - Rules to use SUM or SPAM/SAINT to apply SPs for ABAP stacks
