Personas R2 Call to Function Module Fails due to character string that includes an umlaut?

My script calls a function module that is intended to return a character string to Personas. The returned string contains an umlaut 'e' character and the script fails. If I run the function module outside of Personas it works ok.

Is there a way of 'escaping' the string to stop this error occurring within Personas?
