Doubt about Oracle Database SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605

Hi,

I´m new in SAP WORLD and i have a doubt about Oracle Database SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605.

We have a SAP installation that uses an ORACLE 11.2.0.3 rdbms on LINUX.

Our customer would like to upgrade Oracle RDBMS to 11.2.0.4 and told us all we need to do is to apply  "SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605".

But we have readed here some upgrade guides like:

- Database Upgrade Guide

Upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2): UNIX

For Oracle Patch Set Release 11.2.0.4

- Best Practice

Document Version: 1.0 – 2015-02-04

Oracle Database Upgrade to 11.2.0.3

Upgrade Guide

Both the documents explain that it´s necessary to upgrade RBMS ORACLE to 11.2.0.4 using specific oracle update patches (ex: using runinstaller) and only then apply  "SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605".

Our customer insists that only "SAP Bundle" is necessary, so our doubts are (sorry if they are silly questions 😞

- Is it possible to apply "SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605" in a SAP installation with ORACLE RBMS 11.2.0.3 installed?  Or did "SAP Bundle" upgrades the RDBMS to 11.2.0.4?

- If runinstaller is necessary, did we need to download it from Oracle Support?

Best regards,

Sergio

Hi,

As everyone suggested, Oracle will NOT let you apply SBP 11.2.0.4 on Oracle 11.2.0.3. If you try this, it will throw errors. So, upgrade it to 11.2.0.4 and apply SBP 11.2.0.4. No bug fixes, no patches, no CPU/SPUs, no PSUs, no BPs produced for Oracle database 11.2.0.3 since August 28, 2015. And all new installations of SAP will require minimum Oracle version 11.2.0.4. You can convince your customer with this information available in Oracle site and propose for upgrade. The below some important steps may help you in upgrade.

All media are available in Marketplace for download:

  • Install Oracle 11.2.0.4 software
  • Upgrade OPatch
  • Install SBP 11.2.0.4 and other Generic Patches
  • Upgrade Oracle client software
  • Adopt SQL*NET files for the new environment
  • Check for any invalid objects (@ultrp.sql)
  • Run pre-upgrade scripts, check and solve the issues reported
  • Run DBUA for the actual upgrade
  • Run post-upgrade scripts
  • Check for any invalid objects after the upgrade
  • Create new listener service for 11.2.0.4
  • Ensure to run catsbp.sql and cehck for any errors
  • Post upgrade checks
  • If everything is OK, then run uninstaller to remove old 11.2.0.3 database including all services related to it

Ganesan

hi Sergio,

"SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605". can ONLY be installed on 11.2.0.4 oracle version.

You have to upgrade to 11.2.0.4 from 11.2.0.3 in order to install the patch.

You project steps would be followings:

1. install 11.2.0.4
2. install "SAP Bundle Patch 11.2.0.4.160419 - 201605". for 11.2.0.4

3. run dbua to upgrade 11.2.0.3

Please note you need to run catsbp.sql afterwards, for details please refer to scn

Read the Oracle installation and upgrade guide.

The installation of Oracle 11G patchset 11.2.0.4 can be done online as this is done on a separate filesystem. /oracle/SID/11204. After the Oracle database software installation you should apply the latest SBP for 11.2.0.4 release using the MOpatch tool (again an online operation). You basically set the environment variable temporarily to the new ORACLE_HOME and apply the SBP. The execution of the catsbp.sql script should be done after the database has been upgraded to 11.2.0.4.

Hi Sergio,

Do not install 11.2.0.4 SBP on 11.2.0.3.

You need to first upgrade your database from 11.2.0.3 to 11.2.0.4 and then install this SBP.

All the media and installation files can be downloaded from SAP service marketplace.

Please check SAP Note 2015603 about SBP installation.

Thanks,

Manish
