Generic Analysis Template vs. BEx Java Adhoc Template

I tried to do a search but it seems that nobody has raised this as an issue yet:

While SAP is trying to push customers to make use of the Generic Analysis Template (in Design Studio 1.6), it does seem that basic functionalities such as drag n' drop of characteristics still leave a lot of room for improvement. The generic analysis template is sluggish and paging of records is not allowed by default unless you go with some SDK plugin.

Am I the only one experiencing these issues, or have you guys found some workaround or solution to get this template to react as fast as the BEx Java adhoc template 0ADHOC_ANALYSIS?

I thought you could drag and drop with the templates Design Studio Ready-To-Run Templates ASUG Webcast Recap but maybe I misunderstand

I haven't used the Web Application Designer in several years so I can't compare the performance any more.

    Hi,

Design Studio is a tool which is evolving over time, so we should expect to see improvements with new releases. Can you be more specific about your issues though so we can provide guidance accordingly?

    1) When you say "basic functionalities such as drag and drop of characteristics still leave a lot of room for improvement" can you provide examples of the functionality you are looking for in this context?

    2) What do you mean by "paging of records is not allowed by default unless you go with some SDK plugin"? The Crosstab in the Generic Analysis Template should allow you to page through a data set.

    3) As far as performance is concerned, this needs to be addressed on a case by case basis by profiling the Design Studio application to confirm the root cause of the issues and then optimising accordingly.

    Regards,

    Mustafa.

Hello Tammy, yes we can do drag and drop with the generic analysis template - sorry for being misleading.

    Mustafa:

    1) What I meant to say about the drag n' drop is that in the past in BEx Java we could drag characteristics, and if the list of Free Characteristics is too long, I can drag and hold the characteristic, and scroll around the report/page with my mouse wheel before placing the characteristic.

Now with this generic analysis template, if I have say, 10 dimensions in Rows, and I want to bring the 1st dimension and place it at the very end, I can't do it the same way.

    2) For paging of records, if the results in the crosstab is say 10,000 rows, these are all displayed in one go in a single page. There is no option to say, display maximum of 1,000 rows and then split the remaining 99,000 into 99 more pages (without the use of a SDK plugin, if I am not wrong).

    3) Performance-wise, regarding point #2 above, if paging can be implemented I believe this can help the performance. One other thing I noticed with the generic analysis template is that if I have 10,000 rows in the crosstab displayed, and I re-size my browser window to say, a smaller size, for some reason the DS generic analysis template tries to re-render the crosstab rows/results again.

This leads to sometimes like a 2-3 seconds delay (possibly more!) with just a system activity like re-sizing your browser window.

This "re-rendering" behavior takes place especially when you're working with multiple monitors: Drag your browser with the generic analysis template report fired up, and there is a 2-3 seconds lag when you bring your browser into your second monitor (and vice versa).

I would expect the data results to just stay as-is and not try to re-render itself to try to fit the screen.

Or is there some setting that I am missing out on?

Thanks in advance for your quick responses!
