Changing the Data source's version not affecting implementation

How can I change the version of the server on an existing data source. So what I am saying in more detail is,let 's suppose, I have a data source setup for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 but the data source was upgraded to Microsoft SQL Server 2014. How can I alter the version of the DS data source without affecting the already implemented functionality?

    Create a 2nd datastore configuration with the new settings and make it the default.
