Location of initSID.utl with Oracle 12c

Good morning,

There is a point that is not clear with brtools and backint configuration on Oracle12c.

I have not found clear documentation concerning this point in SAP Notes.

Beginning with Oracle 12c, SAP brtools uses /oracle/SID/sapprof/,

to store the brtools configuration file (initSID.sap), instead of /oracle/SID/121/dbs/.

In the case of backint usage, should the initSID.utl be created in the sapprof or dbs directory?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello Schmid,

If brtools use this location and reading the file from here /oracle/SID/sapprof/, then init.utl file should place there. We are running oracle 12 c and init.utl file located in /oracle/SID/12102/dbs/ based on our third party information.

Thanks,

BM

The thing is that 3rd party are not aware of sapporf directory.

If I understand well you had to manually configure util_par_file= /oracle/SID/12102/dbs/initSID.utl

otherwise it would serach for it in sapporf directory.

Am I correct?

Hello Schmid,

Yes, you have to co-ordinate with third party and configure the backin to place the init.utl file whether to place in 'dbs' loaction or sapprof  configure manually based on your requirement. I hope now you understand.

Thanks,

BM

Hi,

Backint configuration MUST be provided by the backint 3rd party manufacturer. They must tell you where the file will be searched by the backint tool.

What you are saying is not correct the path of the .utl file is provided in the .sap file.

This is provided by SAP and not the 3rd party manufacturer.

SAP also recommends default path for .sap and .utl files.

SAP has changed the default location of the .sap file to sapprof.

My question is: Has the default path of the .utl file also been changed to sapprof.

Hi,

the SAP parameter util_par_file indicates the name of the file, it can also indicate the path, that does not mean that SAP provides the file, it is the backint provided who tells you where it should go and what should be the content.

If you look for the "default" location if you do not specify it, the documentation is not up to date (unfortunately)

I you have a sapprof directory (and, of course, a recent version of the BR*Tools) the backint should be located there

Hello,

To make things clear, I have never said that SAP provides the util file.

I am speaking only about it location, since the beginning of the thread.

Do you mean that, if no full path is provided in util_par_file, brtools supposes that the .utl file is in sapprof directory?

The backint file should be present in the standard installation location with a symbolic link in the kernel directory to the standard location. I don't see a need to have the backint (installed) in the sapprof directory. BR*Tools reads the .utl file based on the information and the location specified in the .sap profile and then passes this information to the backint tool.

The newer version of the BR*Tools should be looking for the .sap profile in the $SAPDATA_HOME/sapprof location and if the .sap profile has util_par_file configured with just the .utl file but not with the full path then I am guessing it will look for the .utl file in the old dbs location according to this util_par_file - SAP Database Guide: Oracle - SAP Library

Unfortunately the above documentation is not updated and clear as to whether it is just for RAC systems or for all systems from 11G and above.

Maybe you can modify the .sap profile by testing it with full path to the .utl file and with just the .utl file and see which one is used by the system. Make sure to remove/move the one in the dbs diretcory before you test it.
