backup strategy

Hello All,

How can we plan a backup strategy for a ECC + content server landscape , the system being a legacy system - used for short durations when users need it - not a lot of activity .

Can anyone advice me on this.

Thanks in advance,

Uday

You will need to schedule a backup for the database used by the ECC system and a backup for the MaxDB database which is used by the Content Server. If you need backups for the non-DB filesystems then you should consider scheduling backups for them as well. You should probably ask the business to understand the backup requirements. If they are OK with just one backup for a week then schedule the backups accordingly. You should advice them the consequences of having only one backup in a week.

Hi Benjamin,

The systems are now under migration to Azure.

The image of VM will be scheduled but application level should be taken care by me.

There will not be a lot of activity on the system , need to plan the strategy for backups incase restore + recovery are needed.

--> How are usual backups taken on maxdb ?

Please help me on the above.

Thanks,

Uday

Dear Uday,

Hope you are doing good.

The strategy varies from customer to customer, but SAP does provide some general guidelines.

If you need a point in time recovery offline backup is recommended.

In future, please keep a complete offline backup saved in the tape atleast. As per official SAP recommendation a complete offline DB plus file system backup needs to be taken atleast every 28 days and you should store it on TAPE for a lot more time. Please liaise with your DBA who should be able to help you with this.

Also filesystem backup of /usr/sap/sid should also needed (the important file in this case are the profile files and the SDM program files (repository)

Hope this helps.

Hi Hemanth,

Thank you for the reply.

I need some help in configuring backups on a new system which is under migration and will be in BAU.

The system will run on Oracle 11.2.0.1 and is a legacy system which will come up only on the request by the user , once a month.

How can I go about this , considering I will be supporting DB and SAP.

Thank you.

Dear Uday,

Hope you are doing good.

You can use /nDB13 or other techniques like Backint etc.
