Extended Fiscal Year

Former Member

Our company is on 4-5-4 calendar, where financial year ends in September. We want to change the fiscal year end to December from September in SAP. Fiscal year 2016 started in 09/2015 and would have ended in 09/2016. Because of this change, the October, November and December months will be transition periods in 2016.

In order to achieve this in SAP, I am using special periods in 2016 (FY 2016 will have 12 periods and 3 special periods) and also use substitution rule to define the posting period for special periods at document header level based on the posting date. In OB29, the period 12 will be set from Sep through December (see screenshot OB29).

By using the posting date, the posting periods will be substituted.

Posting date 10/1 – 10/28 = Period 13

Posting date 10/29 – 12/2 = Period 14

Posting date 12/3 – 12/30 = Period 15

Has anyone used this approach for extended fiscal year?

Hi Oyuma,

Please first carry out the customization and changes in Development client and do proper testing in it, once you observe the results are correct then move the changes into production.

the approach you mentioned above by using special periods is not designed for short.end fiscal year, we can use special periods for any year regularly. if a new fiscal year started and postings are happening in new year. but as per the audit you need to post some adjustments to previous years then you can use special period, in period field you can give 13,14,15 or 16 instead of 1 to 12 and posting date is any date of  last period of the previous fiscal year. this way we can easily identify the adjustments posted to the previous year.

For Short end fiscal years,  we need to change the settings of the Fiscal year variant in t.code OB29, select the Fiscal year variant correspond to your co.code fiscal year variant and then select the check box for year dependent and periods 12,  then select the short end fiscal year variant and give the year for which you need short end fiscal year, in your case 2016 , and Oct, nov, dec are short end fiscal periods, so give 3. and then goto periods and fill the periods Jan to sep as periods from 1 to 9 with year shift +1, and from Oct to Nov as periods from 1 to 3 year shift Zero. once the December ends please carry out year end closing procedures. then from next year you can choose your fiscal year variant as calendar year.

pls go to t.code ob29 and observe the short end fiscal year variants with AM for the year 1993 and R1 for the year 1994 from IDES system.

Thanks and regards,
