Technical Monitoring Alerting configuration only on alerts level under template

Hello Colleagues,

I am currently working on setup the new Technical System Monitoring Solution on SAP Solution Manager 7.1.

I have a question regarding Alerting respectively Notifications.

At "Default Settings (2.3)" you are able to activate "Automatic Notification = Active" but this activation will effect to all templates as a global activation.

We are concerned to get to much alerts (not really relevant alerts) and therefore we prefer to activate alerting/notification on alerts level under the template.

Step by Step first for the most important ones.

There some documents available which talking about hierarchy "Global Settings" > "Template Settings" > "Alert Settings" but I didn't found any suitable documentation regarding activate alerting/notification on alerts level.

During my test I wasn't able to activate alerting/notification on alerts level. No emails was sended out.

Only after activate "Automatic Notification = Active" under "Default Settings (2.3)" emails as notifications was created and sended out.

But now I will receive all other alert stuff for all templates.

Any suggestions how I am able to configure only on alerts level under template?

Many thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jochen Schertel

Hello Ruth, Hello Manish and Prakhar,

issue is solved!

The problem was related to a wrong (default) template assignment and not

my custom template.

Under Step "Setup Monitoring (6)", under Assign Templates there was

assignment of the default template "AIX" but I created a custom template

"Z_Derived form AIX" under "AIX". So, the activation doesn't effect to

my custom template.

After change the template assignment to my custom template "Z_Derived

form AIX" (drop down list), now the alerting works and I receive the

notification email.

So my problem is solved and maybe this is helpfully for other colleagues!

Many thanks to all of you for support!

Regards,

Jochen

Hi Jochen,

In the template which you are using , select the "Alert" for which you want to configure the notification.

Under notification tab, you have 3 ways ( Active, Template, Inactive ).

1. Active = You don't want to use the global defaults as well as template defaults. You can add your own desired recepients when you select this option.

2. Inactive = Don't want notifications

3. Template Settings = Template defaults

Settings made at lower level of the hierarchy overrides the higher level.

Hope this helps.

Manish

Hi Manish,

many thanks for reply and help!

I have only activate Alert "File Systems Full" for Automatic Notification under Custom Template "Z_Derived from AIX". In this case I will not receive any email notification.

If I activate "Global" + "Template" + "specific Alert" email notification works for the specific Alert plus all other stuff related to the system.

Is this enough or is required to activate first on "Default Settings (2.3)" the global Automatic Notification to "Active", second on the "Template Maintenance (4)" under Notification > Template Settings > Automatic Notification to "Active" at last under "Template Maintenance (4)" > Alerts > Notifications > "File System Full" > Automatic Notification to "Active"?

Easy spoken, you have to activate always the Global Settings + Template Settings + Alert Settings to get an alter notification at all if you want an alert for only one setting like "File System Full"?

@Prakhar, many thanks for your reply, the documentation I already know.

@Ruth, many thanks for your reply, the SAP Note is great but answered not my question.

Hi Jochen,

It is not mandatory for central setting to be changed as you are doing at managed object level

but it is important that post doing your changes at managed object level..please activate your template again so that new changes will reflect

hope this helps

Hi Prakhar,

so you mean activation under "Default Settings "2.3)" Automatic Notification isn't required.

Only respective Template e.g. "Z_Derived from AIX" Notification On + under Alerts the respective Alert "File System Full".

Right?

Hi Jochen,

Please note the reconfiguration of the monitoring needs to be done when any changes have been performed to the system, please activate the monitoring for your systems again: Solman_Setup -> Technical Monitoring -> Define Scope -> Setup Monitoring -> Edit -> Apply and Activate "All Managed Objects in background"

Please also check in the Alerting Directory Browser that Notifications are active here for the Alert.
