You do not have to use the Alternative Activity Description at all.
There is a field for a default Activity Type that will populate on Network Activities but that can be overwritten as well.
The only relationship that needs to exist is that a rate must be maintained (KP26) between the Activity Type and Cost Center specified on the workcenter. In that respect, you can have as many activity types as you want.

To my knowledge, that TAB cannot be used for PS NW Activities. It is used for PP orders and if you want to split you activities per record type groups, that'is used. As Ken mentioned, within KP26, you can link as many activity types as you wish to the cost center of your work center.
