Backup strategies - SAP IQ 16 (Edge edition)

Hi

we are implementing SAP IQ 16 ads part of SAP BI Suite Edge.  This means a single standalone server with no multiplex.

What options are available for backups and basic DR? I know the DR piece is a piece of string ... but basically, bring the system back up with 24hrs.  SAQ IQ database size around 100GB max.

I'm lead to believe that Sybase Replication server doesn't work for IQ16 2 IQ16?

Hi ... from the doco I can only see the option of scripted backups.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

SRS is used with row-based OLTP DBMS engines where there is a transaction log recording all committed DML changes to the database.  IQ does not log DML changes the same way, so SRS cannot read from IQ.

You can perform scripted backups, however.  Backups can be performed online, so you do not have to shut down IQ to backup.

You should look into the 'Virtual Backup' feature of IQ.  This can allow you to use disk mirroring to perform the backup very quickly.

100GB is a small IQ database, so a 24-hour SLA should not be an issue.

Make sure you have more than 1 DB file in your IQ Main Store (have a look at the IQ Sizing Guide - http://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/SYBIQ/SAP+IQ+Best+Practices+and+Hardware+Sizing+Guide) to increase the performance of the backup, regardless of how you do it.  Also make sure you have sufficient space in the IQ Main Store to allow the backup to complete - IQ will build up versions in the IQ Main Store while the backup is running, which will be released after the backup completes - the faster the backup, the less version space may build up (this depends on the amount of change - loads, etc - that may occur during the backup).
