Hello all,

We have a db approx. 4 tb.We have to lower this size as much as we can do.As i know in oracle and sql,you can compress your database and this operation lowers your database size.I do not want the data which will be inserted in the future to be compressed.I want the existing data to be compressed.I tried compression advisor to compress table but it did not work properly.I am searching for a method that compresses all database by making one operation.

Hi Berk,

Why wouldn't you want data inserted in the future to be compressed?

How did the compression advisor not work properly?
What happened when you tried to use it?

Berk,

ASE_COMPRESSION does compress the data but how much compression will depend on how you do it. However, note that whilst SAN/disk reads are faster (around 25% in our case), cache reads are slower (cached data is compressed and needs to be uncompressed every time you read it).

The net effect on your system will depend on ratio of cache:SAN reads, and how slow your SAN/disk is. Obviously upgrading your CPU's will to faster ones will mitigate any slowness to cache reads.

Another option is to looks at Data Virtualisation. Delphix will compress all your data and is a more cost effective option. (It also give the ability to view your data over time - incredibly useful!)

Hi Berk,

I know this is a bit off topic but have you performed any reorgs perhaps to also reclaim space?

Hi,

Just to clarify that ASE_COMPRESSION license is already included on ASE for SAP BS/BW.

Data compression is enabled by default on SAP applications running on ASE (BS/BW) so your data is already being compressed. However index compression has been introduced since ASE 16 SP01 (you'll also need ABAP adjustments from SAP Note 2127007 - SYB: DDIC - Index Compression in SAP DDIC )

You may refer to this documentation "Getting Started with SAP Applications Using SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise"  on pages 5 and 6, as well the document about Compression Advisor mentioned by Kiran, which requires to have implemented this SAP Note (or last SAP Basis) 2098300 - SYB: Preliminary version of Compression Advisor

Kind regards,
Victoria.

Hi Berk,

Yes I do agree as Mr Gaurav said you should enable license to opt this option.

Also I can give you 2 beautiful links which talks about the compression and its benefits.

1st is blog written by Mr Jef:

2nd is Compression Advision my Mr Andreas:

Compression Advisor for SAP Adaptive Server Ent... | SCN

Let me know if this helped you in understanding the compression concept.

You need the required license of ASE_COMPRESSION and then set the server wide configuration parameter "enable compression". Please refer the below online document for more details :
