Mean Time To Failure / Mean Time between Failure

     Hi Everyone,

I am currently trying to figure out a way to enter failure dates for a product into SAP but I can not find the right Gap in SAP where I can do that.

I already found out the reports that I have to run to get the MTTF, which is MCJC.

Hopefully someone is here who can acutally help me.

Best regards,

Sascha Petersen

Good Morning Petersen,

I understand from your requirement that, you need to enter the failure dates for a product ( i.e technical object )  in SAP. In SAP we have "Notification" which is well defined as a tool you use in exceptional operational situations in maintenance processing to

  • Describe the technical emergency situation of an object
  • Request a required task in the maintenance processing
  • Document the work performed

In your case you can use to document the failure dates of tech. object ( Activity report for documenting performed actions). There are different ways to create notifications in SAP like IW21, IW24-26 that are directly available in SAP EAM.

Warm regards,

PS R

First of all thank you all for the fast replies!

I will look into each one and see which one meets the demanded functions!

As an example there is a break which is installed in many machines, so we have the installation date recorded. Now I have many failure reports for that one break that state when it was worn of, but these are not implemented in SAP yet.

Therefore I would like to enter the failure dates into SAP for each report, so that SAP can calculate a MTTF for us.

I hope that this is comprehensive.

Hello Sascha

Welcome to Community, as you've joined few hours ago

  • Because you used the word 'particular Product', I'd like to clarify that if you have 10 pieces of a particular product for which (each piece) you want to have the MTTR/MTBR analysis then, you need to create each piece as one Technical object in SAP-PM. This technical object can be either Equipment or a Functional Location.
  • If these are FLocns then the report will be available in MCJC and when these are Equipments the report is MCJB.
  • Then pre-reqiusites for getting these reports
    • You should maintain the Start-up Date in the FLocn / Equipment master indicating the date from which this was put into use.
    • Then, each failure (Breakdown) of the Product piece (Equipment/FLocn) needs to be reported in the form of a Malfunction Notification.
    • In the customizing, when we Create Notification types the Malfunction Notification type used to record these events should have value '26' in the field Update group (stats).
    • And then, the Breakdown field in the Notification should be ticked.
    • All four fields viz, Malfunction Start/End Date and Time should be filled.
    • Refer to this document for all the above at one place. MTTR / MTBR  Pre-requisites

Good luck

Hi Sascha

You need to create Notifications for that purpose. They are the transactional objects used for statistical purposes as well as work initiation & identification of defects/failures/breakdowns.

Maintenance Notifications (PM-WOC-MN) - Notifications (CA-NO) - SAP Library
