OK, Thankyou for replying Gurus.

What i have found out is that during material creation if the EAN number is entered then the user is able to change the EAN number and update it. But if the Number is not maintained while creation and then if the user tries to enter the EAN, He gets the error "

( EAN No. may not be assigned Externally )

Other thing i noticed is that the EAN is a 14 Digit number. but it starts with the number zero "0" so as soon as the user enters the EAN and the EAN Category, the system does not capture the 14 digit EAN, instead it captures 13 digit EAN and ignores the Zero

Could that be the problem ?

Dear Amit,

EAN number depends on many factors.

Some of them being : The number range needs to be configured, It always relates to the Base UoM of the material, It can be external or internal number range.

As per your error message, the number range is internal (EAN category IE / IK / VC possibily). In case of internal number range, user can only enter the EAN category. System will not allow to enter the EAN number. Probably user used to enter the EAN category earlier, and system used to assign the next number from the number range.

If the category is external, then only user can enter the external number at EAN field.

Thanks

Prem

You should have searched before posting your query. For example see the link Error message WE216 - The EAN xxxxxxxxx may not... | SCN which provided one solution for similar issue.

The first thing I would do would be to check if the user entered the correct EAN category, if the answer was yes, then I would check if somebody changed recently the setup of this EAN category in customizing.

Did you try to search the forum with the error message as a criteria - WE216?

There can be also other reasons for this message to occur.

Did you check the SAP notes with the same criteria as well?

Did none of these notes give you a hint what is the problem?

Please share what investigation you have performed so far to narrow down the possible causes.
