First Article Inspection for Production

All What is the best way to setup a first article inspection (Model Inspection) and Normal inspection for a manufactured material? First article inspection only happens for a new material or when the material revision changes and the standard or normal inspection is your business as usual (day to day) inspection. Do I need two inspection plans? Or do I just need a MIC called FAI (First Article Inspection) that can be assigned to a DMR? Any pointers would appreciated . Thanks John

Hi John,

Best way is to control through DMR, where in you get facility to test the FAI specific MIC at first inspection lot only.

As suggested by Venkat, if FAI MIC is added to other MICs, user need to record result always or provide UD without completing all char.

Also I would like to know how system will know the material is new or revision no. of material is changed.

Thanks and Regards

Hi John,

Please find below details for your query.

1. Maintain two inspection plans. First inspection plan for regular inspection and second inspection plan for new material or when the material revision changes.

2. For first inspection assign the MICs used for regular inspection.

3. For second inspection plan assign the MICs used for new material or when the material revision changes. i.e. FAI (First article inspection)

4. Every time inspection lot when created it will be in CRTD status and user needs to assign the inspection plan accordingly.

5. Maintain description of inspection plans for easy understanding for the users.

6. I don't see DMR will help you as there isn't any specific interval for regular inspection and FAI.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Gururaj, I like the idea however my users do not like the idea of manually intervening every time there is a new inspection lot. Ideally, I would like a automatic quality plan selection based on whether there it is the first time we are manufacturing the component or an up issue of the material revision. Any ideas?

Hi John,

If multiple inspection plans exist then for automatic assignment of inspection plan you need to do the enhancement for this.

e.g. You can create workcenter FAI and assign this to inspection plan for new material or revision change. similarly you can create another workcenter and assign to inspection plan for regular inspection. If you built the correct logic then inspection plan can be assigned correctly. This is just an example, but you need to apply the logic to work as required.

Thanks,

Hi John,

Its depends what actually you want to do in first article inspection.

There are following two approaches:

1) If you want to do FAI and later onwards for that material you don't want to do stock posting, you can go with DMR approach.

2) As said by Vankat, If you just want to identify the FAI you can go with cration of FAI MIC.

Hi John,

Having two inspection plans, or maintaining DMR may increase your master data work. Instead, create a qualitative MIC (FAI with codes as "YES", "NO") and add to the list of other MICs during results recording for the FAI. Record the result as Yes to FAI - First article inspection MIC.

And you can have the option to maintain long test for the MIC at results recording.

Hope this is useful to you.

Thanks and regards

Hi Venkat, I like your idea but not sure what you mean by "And you can have the option to maintain long test for the MIC at results recording." Please elaborate.... Also, if I want that MIC to appear only when a new material is manufactured for the first time or when there has been a material revision. How would I trigger it with standard config?
