Urgent - Sap MAXDB Support - Database slow and not responding to entries

Former Member

Hi all we are running SAP MAX DB Version 7.7. We have about maximum 200 users at any one time. Recently we don't know what has happened but it is struggling to take in entries.

We have checked all hardware and network and at maximum is only operation at 50%. The database is struggling to take in data entry.

Querying data seems okay but slow.

What could the issue be and if someone could suggest a list of checklist will be great and hopefully a solution. Thank you.

Hi Giri,

please start the Database Analyzer in an interval of 900 seconds and check the output in dban.prt.

If your database is running in a SAP environment please use transaction DBACockpit to start the DB-Analyzer.

You'll find more information about the Database Analyzer in note 530394

Hi Christiane,

Thanks for the help. We have performed it and have not received any errors or output that is out of the ordinary. These are the following issues,

Database becomes extremely slow from time to time. Does not like inputting data or writing data into it however querying data is not so much of a problem. Restarting the server and database helps it till for a while. Uploading files takes a long time. In general, any writing activity to the disk slows it down. When only a few people are doing something the database is fine. It seems to struggle when a lot of simultaneous data is being entered. The database struggles when more people are writing data to it. In a space of 5 minute I have seen the performance go from 100% to 0% back and forth It is possible there could be an issue in the queue to execute the writing into the database.

Hi James and Christiane,

We have not made any changes to the database before this problem started to occur. Everything on the IT side does not point to any problem. We have increased RAM , Disk Space, Cache but still does not help it. Restarting the database helps but only for a few hours. We have performed all the diagnostics on both the server and the database and not getting any errors.

Hi Giri,

without a curernt dban.prt we cannot help in this case. So please provide DB-Analyzer log file.

If this is a SAP system you could also create a SAP ticket and provide connection to your system .

The SAP can checks the system.

Are you sure that your server is not swapping when the problems occured?

Which database version do you use?

Hi Christine and James,

Dropping all the indexes and renaming them for all the tables have worked and restored speed yesterday. Today however the database has been up and down but not as bad as before Wednesday. Do you guys have any idea what else could it be.

Hello Giri,

I do not understand why you dropped and recreated all indexes. It is niot necessary to do this with a MaxDB database - index reorganisation is not necessary.

So I cannot believe that this action has any huge influence to your performance.

More important is to run update statistics.

But again , we cannot give you hints to tzune your system without the output of the DB-Analyzer dban.prt.

Hi Giri,

Was there any change? This issue suddenly happens?

Maybe you can perform parameter check 1111426 to review the database parameters.

Best regards,
James

never mind. However for such kind of issue, we have to think "what changed", because if the system has been working fine, then something probably changed, then caused this issue
