Hi,
I am trying to install Powerbuilder 12.6 Evaluation on a Windows 10 stand-alone PC (64 bit , 12GB memory). I choose to install Powerbuilder Classic only (no .NET or web stuff). After the option to include SQL Anywhere – answered no – the install hangs and just shows a dialog “Setup is running in another window, use ALT+TAB to switch between windows”. The task manager shows 2 tasks: SAP Powerbuilder 12.6 Setup and Powerbuilder Setup Launcher (32 bit) both using 0% cpu.
Please how can I get it to install?
Hi Gerry;
This is rare but does seen to happen on the odd W10 based PC. It's typically an issue with a Service that interferes with PB. Now the big question ... Which one?
I would first try the easiest route and boot your W10 into "safe" mode. Then try the install again.
HTH

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply but now I am completely stuck.
I ran the installation in safe mode (minimal) and it seemed to be going ok, but at the end it started to loop – Extracting – Installing – Extracting – Installing etc (0%cpu). In the end I had to kill it with the task manager. Back to normal start-up and just in case the install had finished I tried to start PB. Just got the splash screen. So I tried to uninstall it from add or remove programs and got the message ”Setup has detected that this installation was NOT launched by the SAP Common Installer……. Setup will now terminate”; there is no uninstall option in the common installer. Attempting to install again I get the message “There is a previous release bla bla please uninstall first! So now I can't uninstall or Install it! How do I get out of this Catch 22 situation?
Thanks,
Gerry.
Wow ... That is really weird!
1) try the uninstall in normal mode.
2) if #1 fails, try deleting the Sybase/PowerBuillder folder underneath the ProgramFiles(x86) folder.
3) run uninstall again. It should not find PB and thus cleanup the old uninstall registry entries.
4) reboot you PC
5) try the PB 12.6 install again. However this time, do a full install.
Good luck!
Right,
Deleted the powerbuilder folder
Tried to uninstall – Do you wish to delete….? - Yes – Message disappears and nothing happens. Still can't uninstall.
Reboot
Attempt to install (safe mode) – There is a previous release ….!
I have run CCleaner – 1400 registry entries deleted – but the install is still detecting a previous installation. I will now have to trawl the whole registry and delete any references to pb126. I will have to be very, very careful though as I have PB10.5 already installed.I
It could be another service. I have also heard of things like Touch Pad, Team Viewer, Finger Print, etc services interfering with PB as well.
For some reason, the runtime issues with the PB IDE are not happening on AMD based processor machines, just Intel. Very weird.
Hopefully, Appeon will address this problem when they take over PB in the near future in their 1st Appeon PB release.
PS: Appeon is hoping to release Appeon PB within 9 months of signing the SAP contract to takeover PB Development. Last year SVP Dirk Bossemann of SAP said at the PB Conference last May that he hoped the contract to be in place by July, 2015 - August at the latest. Since then, SAP has been significantly dragging their heels on this. Unfortunately, Appeon's hands are tied until the SAP contract for PB is in place so that they can then proceed with their version of PB Classic.
Hi Chris,
I have already uninstalled it with the tried and true delete - CCleaner and regedit. If I have to jump through so many hoops to get it to run, it doesn't instill very much confidence in pb12. Maybe after a little while I will have another go, but until then I will stick to 10.5. Pity as I have been a happy user since PB3 under Powersoft (the god old days when EBFs were free).
If I ever get it to work i'll let you know.
Cheers,
Gerry.
Chris and Gerry,
My PowerBuilder days are dated... However, If I may comment, this is an issue that I am rather familiar with from installing and uninstalling SAP ASE and SAP RS on Windows platforms.
It is imperative to check the Windows regsitry prior to re-installing the product. Even if all the files are gone, sometimes there are refferences in the registry to prior installations that cause conflicts.
So, run REGEDIT, and look under the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then under SOFTWARE, then the Powerbuilder folder as it is named now... I am not specifying as it may have changed since the down of time, when Sybase bought it from PowerSoft, and I learned it.
I hope this helps. Let us know.
Regards,
Jean-Pierre
Gerry,
Ok then! I would suggest:
1. Uninstall PowerBuilder
2. Clean the registry
a) with whatever tool you want
BUT also
b) manually!!!!
(Call SAP TS and ask for the exact registry fingerprint of the product, and then erase manually)
3. Install the latest EBF.
Let us know if you are successful.
Regards,
Jean-Pierre
Chris, Surely in safe mode (minimal) all non-essential services aren't running?
Desktop Intel i7 2600K @ 3.4GHz.
12GB memory
BIOS American Megatrends Inc E766MLN.20L, 01/02/2012
Jean-Pierre, I have done 1 and 2. For 3 I would love to try the latest release but you need to pay for the ton of bug fixes in the product The trial version is build 3506. For my 10.5 all EBFs were free (as it should be). If Volkswagen finds a defect in a car it is recalled and fixed for free. Same should go for software.
André, everything is open and I have full admin rights. PB10.5 runs fine.
Gerry.
Hi Gerry;
Thanks for the hardware feedback! Again, an Intel CPU (no surprise to me) having this issue.
=> For my 10.5 all EBFs were free (as it should be). If Volkswagen finds a defect in a car it is recalled and fixed for free. Same should go for software.
Right on ... I am very confident that Appeon will address this injustice!
Regards ... Chris
