SAP HANA Dynamic Tiering backups using 3rd party backup tools

Hello experts,

I would like to ask, if someone has experiences with SAP HANA Dynamic Tiering backups using IBM Tivoli Data Protection for SAP, or another 3rd party backup tool?

We are facing problems with es logs located in /hana/es_log/<SID>/mnt01024/es/eslog/. These logs are not backed up and this fs is getting full. When this fs is full I have to delete some of these logs and use workaround described in SAP note 2205568 to start system.

I found parameters basepath_logbackup_es and basepath_databackup_es, but when I tried to set this parameters nothing changed. My HANA DB version is 1.00.112.05.1469552341.

Unfortunately I can’t find enough information about purpose of these es logs.

I will be grateful for any information about these es logs and methods how to backup it.

Thank you 🙂

Jakub

Hi Jakub,

3rd party backup tools that support backing up HANA systems work through the BACKINT API. Support for HANA dynamic tiering was added to the BACKINT API with the SPS 12 release.

Since you are currently using an SPS 11 version of HANA and DT, the BACKINT interface would not include support for the DT component. You would need to upgrade to SPS 12 and verify that the 3rd party vendor supports backing up HANA systems that include DT.

In the short term, you may want to take a look at Lesson 4 of the DT Quick Start Guide which covers backup and recovery using the native HANA tools:

Thanks
