SAP ERP Integration Strategies & Best Practices: Where to start?

Former Member

I'd like to learn more about the options, standards, and best practices for sending data to / from SAP ERP.  For example, I am aware of wide array of overlapping options and SAP products: SAP Data Services, SAP PI, BAPI's, Web services, IDOC's, RFC's, ABAP, so curious:

  • Is there is some whitepaper or reference material that touches on all of these describing when/where each technique or product is most appropriate?
  • What is a good source of diagrams/strategy illustrating architecture platform / layers to enable SAP integration with diverse collection of consumers and providers of enterprise data?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul

Your question is very wide, and there is actually no one-size-fit-all solution that meets each and every integration needs (at least from an SAP products perspective).

These days, hybrid landscapes are the norm, and the closest thing that I've come across (that have come directly from SAP) to what you are asking is the following Tech Ed session from last year.

INT203: Integration Architectures for Hybrid System Landscapes | SAP TechEd Online</title>&lt...

With respect to specific integration with the ERP system, the following is something that is from 2012.

And with respect to ERP-integration that is mediated by PI/PO, I've touched slightly on this in my rant blog below:-
