Best way to delete storage section: WM

Hi All,

There is a requirement to delete the storage section from one storage type ST1 and create the storage section SC1 with same ID in another storage type ST2

I see there are 2 ways to do that.

1st

Change the bins where SC1 is used -> delete the storage search sequence for SC1 -> delete SC1 ->  create SC1 in ST2 -> create search sequence

2nd

Change the bins where SC1 is used -> delete the storage search sequence for SC1 -> create new storage section SC2 in ST2 -> create search sequence for SC2 -> change SC1 description as "Do no use"

I want to use the 1st way but not sure if it will lead to any inconsistency.

Please suggest how should I go about it.

Regards, Tarun

Hi All,

Thanks all for the suggestions.

@ Jacob: Is it really required not have any open TOs for the storage type in which I am trying to delete the storage section as I have already changed the section in all the bins and as far as TO goes it only has storage type and bin, so TO does not have any direct connection with storage section except through Bin.

Good day,

I doubt it is actually a technical requirement but I would do a quick test if having no open T.O. is troublesome at your location. I would test in lower system to ensure there are no issues with confirming the T.O. after storage section change.

The reason I would want to test personally is because for me, at my location, I simply ask them to complete the open T.O. by the end of the day and I change the bins when they are done. It is no problem at all for me to make that request at my location. I only do so to avoid any possible issues...and to avoid testing myself   🙂

That suggestion is just to be on the "safe side"

The storage section cannot be deleted as in removed from bins and left blank, you can easily change the storage section to some other section with LS11 (mass change). It can be done for an entire storage type and it wont lead to any inconsistencies. I have done the same in production systems multiple times. I would ensure there are no open transfer orders for the specific storage type that will be changed before changing the storage section. As already mentioned, provided no bins exist under the storage section you want to delete then deleting it should not be an issue (although at least one must exist in each storage type and at least one must be assigned to each bin).

Hi Tarun,

1st:- You can delete the bins with stor. section SC1 of ST1. Create section under ST2 type, configure search strategy for SC1 under ST2 and create bins of the same.

2nd:- You can just remove section SC1 for ST1 in search sequence, configure SC1 under ST2 and assign it to search sequence for ST2.

Better option will be to create SC1 under ST2 and do the necessary config, without touching the ST1 part. But the drawback here is if bins are created in future of ST1 stor type and SC1 section, materials will be putawayed there. Choice is your's.

Pls note, for deletion of section SC1 under ST1, you have to make sure , no bin exists for the specified type and section.

Hi

No need to delete the bins in ST1 just change the storage section as mentioned originally in option 1.

Storage section can be changed of a bin but not the storage type. So,basically bins of section SC1 and stor type ST1 will be of no use, it's better to delete/block them.

Hi

The requirement is that the section is no longer required in ST1 NOT the bins. As I understand it, the bins are still required.

Hi Coles,

Absolutely agree with you, but the point is you can not change storage type of a bin. You can do it by creating bins with the same nomenclature under ST2 with section SC1 and delete/block ones under ST1.

Hi

But the point is they do not want to change the storage type of the bins, the bins are to remain in ST1. They just want to assign section SC1 to existing bins in stype ST2

Cheers
