Hello, I'm working on BW 7.3 system and I'm often working and going thru ABAP codes on regular basis in CMOD, routines in transformations etc. I'm wondering how much knowledge of ABAP coding is really required to call someone a proficient BW ETL developer. And is there any ABAP books just for people who develop in BW. Thanks Regards
Hi Samique,
This Question is certainly different....
You need to know the basics of ABAP...The more you know ABAP the Better it is..Always ABAP would be preferred in BW and SQL in HANA...going forward....
However i would like to classify it this way...
Least:-
To Read the Code...say its Statement...understand what has been written.Write Field Routine and What are the types of Code and where all that can be written ....
Medium:-
To write few Select Statements,Read,Loop Statements,Understand Performance Related Optimized Coding Principles...Familiar with Start,Field Routine and End Routine.
High:-
Write Function Module, programs,Expert Routine,BADI..OOPs based ABAP...may be it goes on..
Hope it gives an Idea...

Hi,
As members are telling above, the more you know in ABAP coding the BETTER..We need to have ABAP knowledge since it is always being used modelling providers such as doing lookup, creating routines which can't be handled by existing functions, formula, etc..
That's why, I think it is better to be an ABAP consultant first before shifting to BW course..
But that is an IDEAL scenario..So we need to learn through experience, asking help from our colleagues, and reading some articles related to ABAP..

Loed
