Change the display of material number

Hi MM-Team,

I'm wondering how it would be possible to fulfill the requirement that the material number shown to the outside world is NOT the manufacturer number or our own number.

Background is very simple. We just don't want the customer to know the partnumber so he can easily order somewhere else for a better price.

Some question for details already coming up to my mind, like "do we want to have a "customer spefic outide number" ", means the same internal material number will have different number by customer - sounds like  "the customer material number".

On the internal handling it must be easily identified and to the outside there should be now real chance to get this information.

My the substition can help?

I also heard some rumors about something called SAP CR (coderesolution), but I can't find any hint here or in the internet.

Even though I know that my request lacks of details I wanted to ask if some of you can share experiences regarding such requirements.

Normally your internal material code number would not mean a lot to a person outside the company - e.g. 175783 can be practically anything. Is it the material description that actually helps identifying the exact part?

In case the item description causes a problem and if you do not wish to maintain CMIR - you usually communicate with customers with outputs - can't you just use the sales text (useful for end customers) and the internal code number (so that employees in the billing department would know what this item really is)?

Considering that the customers nowdays are more informed and do some research before ordering, I do not believe that this information could be kept a secret for a long time anyway.

From where did you take this name?

SAP-CR is SAP Component Repository see Landscape Management Database (LMDB) - SAP Solution Manager - SAP Library and OSS note 669669.

Can it be that someone just used this term to tell  you can solve it with own ABAP coding?

Hi Jürgen, thx for coming back on this.

I took it from an online Skype presentation of an other IT-department, who I don't want to ask directly. They mentioned it in the content regarding the switch of the material number.

I guess your assumption is very close to reality. they called it SAP CR code resolution, so they might put the naming themselves to their own "product".

anyway it seems we have to look for our own solution as well and I will try to stay with the SAP-standard

we are using extra material masters called marketing materials, just basic data view and sales views, combined with material determination (substitution) in VB11.  So our internals see the logistic materials on the paper while the communication to outside on sales order, delivery, bill (and of course product label) is using the marketing material. This is only needed because we sell the material under several names even to the same customer and the customer material info record is not sufficient in that case.

Hello Matthias,

To me you can use any of The Fields ( Can be a Z Field) in the Material Master where you can store the Material Number that need to be Outputted to the Forms that need to be sent to Customers. For acheiving this you would need to use ABAP help so that the Number which you have stored in the Material Master is Outputtted for all Customer Forms.

Yes, you can use Customer material number in which u can specify what you want to show to the customer.
