When I created a delta-linked copy of the standard ESS Employee role to modify it, and change the ID to match our client's prefix, none of the links to any of the role contents work (ESS for ERP2004).
I assume I need to maintain the changed role ID somewhere?
Any ideas?

the new role ID probably needs to be updated in IMG:
SPRO > Cross Application and look for the setting there.
