SAP IQ on Azure Vm

Former Member

Hi All,

I was looking for some official info on whether SAP IQ can be installed on Azure VM, but couldn't find anything useful, so I'm looking for help from the community.

As far as I know, there shouldn't be any concerns, as it's just another VM, but want to make sure:

1. It's going to work properly, and more importantly

2. This scenario is supported by SAP

Any insights/opinions are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Mate

Hello

you can use Q – the easy Installer for SAP IQ to install IQ on Azure or on other Hyperscaler based on Linux or Red Hat without any Problems. the tools of course also works on-premise based Linux VM's.

Hi Mate,

In addition to the OS Support, the concern on VM environement is the sub-capacity licensing support.

Here is Sub-capacity compatibility list:

IQ 16 SP08 http://help.sap.com/saphelp_iq1608_iqrb_aix/helpdata/en/a3/8c8d4d84f21015a486b0f328b77327/frameset.h...

IQ 16 SP10 http://help.sap.com/saphelp_iq1610_iqrb_aix/helpdata/en/a3/8c8d4d84f21015a486b0f328b77327/frameset.h...

Hi Tayeb,

That's an excellent point! Even if it works properly, I might not be able to license it, right?

Am I to conclude that it is very likely that IQ on Azure is not supported?

Mate

Right. Licensing not garanteed.

This Support status for IQ may change in future. I suggest see this SAP note

Don't confuse SAP Applications with SAP products.  SAP Apps are tightly coupled to the hardware and software for performance and scalability reasons.

When it comes to cloud support, you can go down two paths.  The first path takes you down the likes of our AWS certification that was announced here: .  This would be a full stack and integration from SAP for that environment.

The second path would simply be to run IQ on a cloud service like AWS or Azure.  In its most basic nature, IQ supports an operating system.  So long as you are running a supported operating system in Azure, then IQ should absolutely be supported as it is running on a supported and certified operating system.

The difference between the two paths is really one of who does the work and how much integration has been done.  Since the base operating system will be one that is certified for IQ, you can do the work yourself to install, deploy, and manage the system.

You would need to bring your own license to run IQ just like you would if you bought the hardware.  If you don't have IQ licenses, check with your account executive as most contracts have the sub capacity stuff as part of the sale.  If you have legacy Sybase licenses, they usually didn't have that language.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for clarifying some of the points. In my case, licenses have been purchased recently, so sub-capacity licensing should be there. I believe when you say "legacy" you mean 3 or more years back, right?

If I remember correctly, to license IQ on a VM, you need to generate a VM identifier and one of the parameters that the utility considers is number of cores. I also seem to remember that the utility used to have issues recognizing the right number of cores (depending on virtualization technology), but I might be wrong here.

The decision needs to be made as soon as possible, as it will make a lot of difference to procure Azure VMs today or wait for the on-premise HW to be purchased, delivered and installed.

Bottom line, I would appreciate it if anyone could provide me with a straightforward answer to:

- Is IQ on Azure VM (Win 2012 R2) supported?

- Can it be licensed?

Also, if there is any official SAP doc I can use, please let me know. Thanks for the inputs!

Hi Mate,

Here is another SAP note related to Sysam licensing on MS Azure 2224416 : http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/2224416

Since the main issue is licensing, the SAP Note provides info to help deploy correctly the license. See the pdf document attached there.

SySAM requires either a static MAC address or a unique Disk Volume Serial number for the hostid field.

OK, after spending some time on this and asking around, here is what I found out:

1. Support: IQ is supported and will work on Azure VM as long as it's running on a supported OS.

2. Licensing: I created an Azure VM, installed IQ and licensed successfully in an un-served mode.

Hope this will be useful to someone.

Mate
