Uninstall Adobe Flash Player 20 ActiveX 2.0.0.267 use the link below
Uninstall Flash Player for Windows
Now re-install Adobe Flash Player 20 ActiveX 2.0.0.228 from archives, use the link below

I think the problem is allied with the release of "Adobe Flash Player 20 ActiveX" version 20.0.0.267 on, or soon after, the 28th December.
If you automatically receive Flash updates you would have received this yesterday.
Check your installed tasks to see what version you have, and if ...267 back out to version 20.0.0.228 (released 8th December).
If your symptoms are the same as mine you will not be able to place a Component on the Canvas in a New file.
Note I am using SCDD (Xcelsius Enterprise) Version 5.5.0.0 (build 12,5,0,1388) on Microsoft Widows 7 home Premium Service Pack 1.

In file -> Document properties ->Check the option Show loading status.
This will help you understand at what stage the loading takes time or stops.
