Steps for Upgrade to PI 7.4 Dual Stack from PI 7.01

Hello Experts,

We are planning to upgrade our SAP PI 7.01 system to SAP PI 7.4 Dual Stack. We have already gone through the SAP Netweaver 7.4 Upgrade Master Guide, and have done the following:

  1. Creation of Maintenance Transaction in SOLMAN MOPz
  2. Stack file generation
  3. Download of Upgrade Media as dictated by the Stack File
  4. Download of SUM SP14

Where our question lies is about the next steps. As per the upgrade master guide, we need to split the dual stack, and move into a single stack installation. However, our decision is to continue with dual-stack in 7.4. And dual-stack is supported in PI 7.4 as exception, as per the master guide. So, the first question is: do we really need to split dual-stack for PI?

The second question: what are the next actionable steps? As per the upgrade guide, we have to now:

  1. Upgrade the NW for Product Instance PI.
  2. Upgrade of Adapter Engine
  3. Perform delta configurations

Will this upgrade both ABAP and Java AS Instances? The upgrade guide suggests that from our source release (7.01) to target release (7.4), we need to follow upgrade procedure for Java, and EHP installation procedure for ABAP. Will this be done in the SUM tool itself?

Please provide guidance.

Thanks in anticipation!

Hi Siddartha,

1. You have to refer the SAP Upgrade guide from SAP SMP. Refer the new link

SAP NetWeaver Guide Finder

2.

All the upgrades take place using the SUM tool ( Dual stack system).

3. Before upgrade you have to check the PI connected system version detail as mention in the SAP Note along with PDF

Hi Siddartha,

do we really need to split dual-stack for PI? --> No, you don't need to split dual-stack

All upgrade will be done by the SUM in one step, but make sure that the stack file that you created from Solman is correct (already include ABAP & Java stack).

Hope this help you.

Hello Pinandito,

Thank you for your answer. Just one more clarification I would request from your side. I checked the downloaded files from SMP (generated through stack file). I can see .SAR files, but not .SCA files, which probably means that the ABAP patches have been downloaded, but not the Java patches. I checked the SOLMAN system itself, there I do not see the Java system for my PI system:

I am suspecting this is the reason why the system did not download the SCA files, because it could not find any Java system corresponding to the product system. So, my further suspicion is that the configuration of the SOLMAN system is not correct. Just wanted to clarify: when a dual stack XI/PI system is registered in SOLMAN, both the ABAP and Java technical systems should get registered? Because then I am closing this thread and going to catch hold of my SOLMAN guy.

Thanks!
