SAP ECC/BW on HANA Implementation and Rollout Project: Recommendations for Go-live strategy

Dear Experts,

We have the following scenario:

An ongoing corporate ERP implementation project for a financial group in Latin America (more than 70 companies); the implementation includes Business Suite on HANA, SAP Banking Services on HANA, SAP BW powered by HANA and SAP BusinessObjects BI. We are almost done with the integration testing, UAT, and we´re now defining the Go-Live Strategy for six of the companies (1 Phase).

This is the first project that I am implementing SAP ECC with BW at the same time, which has been very challenging, and we are now discussing the Go-live strategy for both implementations for the rest of the financial group companies.

We are using IBM Ascendant GT methodology; one of the companies, the smallest one, is already on production with both ECC and BW/BOBJ. During December/15 and January/16, we plan to have another five companies in production. They are planning to have the ECC go-live in cascading for each of the five companies every weekend (A cutover plan per company, per weekend).

One of the things that I'm concerned is how the BW Go-live will fit for each of the roll-outs of the ECC implementation, as the business is also requiring the BW reporting ASAP (we have developed daily reports among others), what would it happen to delta extraction process in BW during the execution of the ECC cutover for each company.

As I mention before, we have one company in both ECC and BW on production, so we need to ensure minimal impact to their daily operation.

For the BW, we've done some minor changes to the EDW Data Model, once we transport from DEV to PRD for the next Roll-outs, we are planning to reinitialized and reload all the BW InfoProviders  (19 Advanced DSO).

Please your advice and recommendations for the following questions:

  1. When it will be the best time to reinitialize ECC Data Sources, as during this, ECC is also loading massive interfaces with master/transactional during ECC roll-outs, and as we need to lock the users/ECC interface processing until data reaches to the BW system during the initialization. Should we wait until ECC rollouts for the six companies (1 phase) are stable enough to start with the initialization in BW?
  2. Should I not be concerned about the BW delta queues during the ECC Rollouts for the rest of the companies? Will the SAP/ODP Extractors guarantee it? Is it possible to have a loss of information in Delta Queues during massive loading of master/transactional data during ECC Rollout?
  3. Do I have to reinitialize ECC data source after each ECC rollouts?

Transactional SAP Extractors (Delta):

  • 0EC_PCA_1
  • 3FI_GL_0L_TT
  • 3FI_GL_Z1_TT
  • 3FI_GL_Z2_TT
  • 3FI_GL_Z3_TT
  • 3FI_GL_Z4_TT
  • 3FI_GL_Z5_TT
  • 0CO_OM_CCA_1_D
  • 0CO_OM_OPA_1_D
  • 0CO_OM_OPA_8

Transactional ODP Extractors (Delta):

  • 0FI_GL_14

I would appreciate it, if you would give me a helping hand and good advice whenever you have the time.

Thank you very much in advanced!

Kind regards,

David P.

Hi David,

Let me try to give an answer to your questions.

Q1 When it will be the best time to reinitialize ECC Data Sources, as during this, ECC is also loading massive interfaces with master/transactional during ECC roll-outs, and as we need to lock the users/ECC interface processing until data reaches to the BW system during the initialization. Should we wait until ECC rollouts for the six companies (1 phase) are stable enough to start with the initialization in BW?

A1. I don't think that there is a need for re-initializing the delta processes. Prerequisite is that you did not restrict the InfoPackage selection.

All mentioned DataSources (FI, CO and PCA) work with a timestamp. I suggest to postpone the delta uploads during the go-live to avoid too much load on the ECC source system.

Q2. Should I not be concerned about the BW delta queues during the ECC Rollouts for the rest of the companies? Will the SAP/ODP Extractors guarantee it? Is it possible to have a loss of information in Delta Queues during massive loading of master/transactional data during ECC Rollout?

A2. I suggest to postpone the delta uploads during the go-live to avoid too much load on the ECC source system. The safety time for all DataSources should avoid any data loss or inconsistencies.

Q3. Do I have to reinitialize ECC data source after each ECC rollouts?

A3. Please see my answers above: I do not suggest to re-initialize delta processes over and over again as it does not add any value in my opinion.

Best regards,

Sander
