Migration to & Compatibility of BW on HANA & Other RDBMS BW

Hi Experts

Our customer intends to migrate its Production instances to HANA from RDBMS.

But Global Development and other regions, would remain on a classical RDBMS.

  1. Is there any constraint?
  2. Will transports work from RDBMS based BW to HANA based BW?
  3. How do we know if current RDBMS based codebase are compatible with all RDBMS version?
  4. What are the changes necessary to do to the RDBMS based codebase, to enable convert its instance to HANA?
  5. Are there optional changes that could better leverage HANA, but would remain be compatible with RDBMS?
  6. Under those constraints, will HANA deliver performance gains sufficient to offset the decommissioning of BI Accelerator?

Valuable feedback will be rewared.

Regards

Partha

    Hi Partha,

If I understood your scenario correctly, you have SAP BW in a HANA compatible release (e.g. 7.31 or 7.4) and you only want to migrate the database of the Production instance to HANA. I.e. all non-Production instances will remain on AnyDB RDBMS (e.g. Oracle).

I strongly doubt if this is a supported scenario by SAP and if that is wise to do. It will throw up crucial and severe limitations, apart from compatibility issues I cannot fully oversee.

It is a best practice and strongly recommended to keep all systems in sync re. BW release, SP level, DB release/patch level and OS release/patch level. Only then transporting objects can be considered as 100% safe.

Another aspect is the major changeover in functionality for BW on HANA. Think of the Eclipse based modeling environment, new InfoProvider types introduced in release 7.4, and so on. You will not benefit of any of those functionality improvements.

Last but not least, please involve SAP to discuss this scenario and ask if it will be supported.

    Best regards,

    Sander
