Give a suggestion to increase/decrease dialog and Background work process

Hello All,

System is not generating any memory dump but sometimes accessing the system is taking very long time.

Please find the below screenshot and let us know if we need to increase the Dialog/Backround work process in the system.

SM51 ( Queue Information)

For all work process

Only Dialog work process

For BG work process

    DIA water mark reached (>30)

    DIA water mark underrun (>30)

which means that your system load is high and there is no more free DIA workprocess can be used at that moment which would be the reason why system accessing slow sometimes.

From the SM50 screenshot, the number of DIA workprocess is 10, however, the number of other workprocess is 15. this configuration is not good because the DIA workprocess number should be more than non-dialog work processes at least.

please refer to 39412 - How many work processes should be configured?

    DIA (dialog):

Number of processes: There must be at least as many processes as the total of configured non-dialog work processes on this instance (also see Note 934109).

Backround work is for batch jobs, therefore, the number of BGD workprocess has nothing to do with system logon or accessing.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Shi Feng

      1. Looking at SM50 screen your dialog processes are running short.

      2. The Roll wait time is high: this is pure indication that your system does not have enough dialog wp.

Total dialog work process = sum of non dialog wp + 1.

If your memory permits than increase the dialog work processes else as a workaround try to reduce background work processes in order to increase dialog and check how the system behave

(you need to monitor the system for background load too).
