I have been reading about Macros and workbench. I have not worked with Macros before, help me with some inputs which would help me to get a basic understanding of it.

I would suggest you also try to create them in your sandbox to understand them more.

Macros are huge topic and unable to tell you in few lines. I am sure we have lot of the treads on SDN about them. Request you to search and read them. Please feel free to ask if there is any specific questions.
