I'm trying to install software on my BI platform (this time its the Design Studio Add-On) but it happens with all software I try to install - it says "Installing" for about 30-45 minutes - then it finally launches the setup program and asks me for Language, etc.
Is it supposed to take this long? Should I be doing something before installing new add-ons?
Thanks!
HI Shane,
As per the best practices when you are installing any BI Product/Patches/Support Pack then make the changes using KBA : 1952120 - SAP BusinessObjects (XI 3.1 and BI 4.0) Installation pre-requisites
This will surely reduce the time. Also Ensure you have sufficient hardware resources available on the system.
Hope it will help.

Mahak

Hi Kelly,
Are you Installing Only Design Studio or ALL BI software ( i.e. IDT, WEBi Rich..etc )?
What is your System Configuration? ( if you are only installing Design Studio. ), Design Studio took around hardly 10 minutes it self, when i was Installing in my work PC ( PC has 16 GB RAM with 256 SSD).

Hi Chandresh
Currently - I'm only installing the Design Studio 1.5 Add-on.
The Server has 12GB RAM running Windows Server 2008 R2
It takes 40 minutes before it lets me start installing... only after waiting 40 minutes does it tell me if I can install it or not.
This happens every time we try to install any software or update on BI platform...
Okay.
Let me take my Step back - I thought on PC installation, but it's on Server.
My experience with Installing on Server was around 30 minutes+ ( approx ) and after waiting this much, i was able to install.
But, only difference is - we have 16 GB RAM with Win 2008 R2.
So,
I would say answer of your question is Yes (it could take).
couple things add up to slow initial start of the installer :
1. Your server is undersized for running bI4.1 - 16gb is minimum required, 32 recommended (and not even mentioning CPU here)
2. If you just click on the exe you downloaded - it has to extract actual install files first into your temp location and only after that it will run setup.exe
so, if you have slow disk I/O and most VM's do - majority of time will be spent there.
3. antivirus - makes everything slow
4. did I mentioned the disk I/O ? try to copy 100mb file from one directory to another on your server and time it, then try the same on your home desktop machine or laptop... see the difference.
5. When installing any addons or patches to BI platform, ensure you stop all BOE sevices, except CMS/FRS.
Thanks Denis - we will try these suggestions see if they help.
We've never stopped the services before - is there a way to do it automatically - or do you have to go one by one?
I'm also noticing many of our services have red health status - but when I drill in - there doesn't appear to be any information to explain what is causing the red alerts - any suggestions?
Hi Shane,
even with the tips & tricks from Denis the time to udpate your BO installation will still take a long time. it depends on how much "old" updates you have already installed on your system. The InstallData folder will grow with each installed update and thus will the time needed for the update.
There was a CEI and the outcome will be available for us customers with BO 4.2
BR,
Michael
