Hostname Change - High Availability Installation

Dear SAP Guru,

I need your advice on the following matter.

Currently, we are doing a technical refresh and we are going to migrate the old server to a new server and at the same time. Perform a unicode conversion. (Old system is non-unicode).

The installation for our Production system will be on Windows cluster (Windows Server 2012). We have two SAP NetWeaver product, ECC & Enterprise Portal.

For our setup, we are requested to use back the same physical and virtual hostname, which the old production server are using currently. We will be using back the same SID as current Production.

So we will be given a temporary physical, virtual cluster, sap group & database group name for our system copy installation on the new Windows Cluster.

What I would like to know is, during the actual Production cut-over, we will shutdown the old Production server. And on the new server we will have to change the physical, virtual cluster, sap group & database group name to the existing one. We will also uninstall the database instance, and perform another database import from the old Production server, so that we get all the latest data in the new server.

What I would like to know are. How difficult is it to change the physical hostname, cluster virtual name, virtual sap group name & virtual database group name? I would assume, all the instance profile need to be changed. Any RFC connection will also have to be changed.

Or a clean system copy will be preferred? I have google around, and couldn't find the information I need. Using SWPM is only to rename the SAP system, but it doesn't support High-Availability system.

Appreciate your expert advice.

Best Regards,

Zechs

Hi Zechs

1. Your current system is standalone SAP system? could you share the Database version?

2. In the new HA system you have to perform the SAP system copy along with Unicode conversion.

You have to export the source and import the same in target system. Single HA you can perform the multiple SAP SID's (SAP ECC & portal system) based on your hardware resources & sizing. its a very big task to switch the system to HA.IF possible you can get the SAP authorized consultant services.

3. Just follow the SAP System copy & New installation HA guide from the SAP link.

SAP NetWeaver Guide Finder

4. For system copy you have to use the SWPM in source & target systems. before starting in the production system. just do the test run in QAS or Dev system in HA environment along with unicode covertion

Hi SS,

Thank you for the detailed explanation. That is really helpful!

So on to my next questions. Once I setup the HA. How difficult will it be to rename the computer name? I have to take care of the SAP profile, RFC?

It is not possible to rename any (physical) computer which is part of a Windows Failover Cluster.

The Failover Cluster itself does not allow that.

Currently it is also not possible to just rename a Virtual Hostname on operating system (failover cluster configuration) level in order to perform a system rename.

So the only way to bring a system from a HA configuration using NameA as hostname to NameB is to perform a system copy as described in the guides.

kind regards

Peter

Hi Zechs

Once I setup the HA. How difficult will it be to rename the computer name?

1.  As already pointed by Peter, In HA environment you may not rename the system. you have to perform the system copy method, you can refer the SAP Note 1619720 with detail.

I have to take care of the SAP profile, RFC?

2. If your are performing the system copy on target system all the RFC & SAP user id's  will be there on target system
