Getting the "CC instance to register in a trunk"

Hi, everyone.

We've been asked if it is possible to get an instance of CCtr to "get to register" in an IMS proxy or alternatively in a sip trunk.

I'm not quite sure what the person asking this to happen means because as far as I know "registering" is a function for a sap endpoint, like a VOIP phone running an account.

Also as far as I know regarding SIP an instance of CCtr is not an endpoint, but rather a middleman that manages allocating and connecting SIP sessions.

So, is there anyone who could clarify this for me?

Hi Jaanus,

actually a SIP bridge uses in the classical way of a PSTN SIP bridge is an endpoint looking at SIP, also we only use unregistered trunks here. For other systems and some equipment I know there are sometimes limitations on what a registered and what an unregistered trunk can do. I think the general gist is registered allows some more personal functions while unregistered allows for more channels, but this is only from my experience and by no means a general rule.

It is not an endpoint in a certain classical sense, as the calls doe not "terminate" on the SIP bridge. Meaning the SIP bridge is not the single IP address for the trunks SIP and RTP to terminate. Also you can do that with PSTN VUs and MRS components doing either NAT or SSR.

What you might need a registered trunk for are certain carriers which allow smaller trunks available through the internet only as registered trunks. Way to go in such situations would be using a SBC which would also protect between an outside trunk network and the internal Network, those SBCs usually are also able to mediate between an internal unregistered and an external registered trunk.

Otherwise I only know of the option to use a user to register to the trunk like registering to a SIP phone, but this to my knowledge is limited to somewhat between 10 and 30 channels.

So basically we would need an extra piece between the IMS and our CCtr instance - a Session Border Controller. This would create a new link that could fail, so we'll need to think if it is truly worth it.
