My developer edition is becoming unusable every 30 days! I though the license period was for 90 days. Anyone able to confirm license period? Damned thing has become unreachable again today after the instance only being created on 24 September.

Finally I could go on with my work thanks to this:

Hi,
This problem keeps recurring!! I have had my new instance now since only October 21 that is only 21 days, and today I am being refused access once again. THIS IS NOT A PARTICULARLY FUNNY JOKE. I have to restart all my work again and again and again.
There HAS to be an explanation and a remedy surely?
Sheesh!!

Hang on,
The idea of the free developer editions is to provide learning environments. The openSAP HANA dev Sp09 course for instance requires that you have such an instance to complete their exercises.
According to you the reliability of such systems ostensibly provided by SAP with certain advertised/touted functionality will be compromised by SAP themselves deprecating the functionality due to the success of the commercial offerings!!
That is one of the least acceptable pseudo explanations I have ever heard!!
If SAP are reducing the reliability of offerings to the development community then why not just say so. Highly unlikely, and in fact from a point of view of alienating the SAP community makes no business sense at all.
not sure how pseudo-explanantion differs from a 'regular' explanation and i was only voicing an opinion or making an observation, if you like.
SAP is not alone in trying to grow revenue from licenses from anyone who wants to use their products, developers included. it's SAP's choice. if developers don't see value, which i think is not true as the ecosystem is quite large, they will abondon the 'free' tools and pursue other, often competitor's, offerings. so, it's a fine balance the company must walk, between the 'free' to ecosystem and 'profitable' to shareholders. SAP is also not interested in giving business away to Amazon where 'free' SAP becomes 'pricey' cloud.
the above is only an observation and not an official statement from SAP, with which i'm not officially associated, apart from using their wonderful products which are very, very reliable.
SAP says have this, it works, it has a 90 day license.I got 30 then 30 then 21?? So
1] Don't say "have this" if it doesn't work properly.
2] If you say it has a 90 day license and it keeps falling over then the reliability that you speak of is questionable in this particular instance I think.
I am a 20 year veteran of working with SAP products as a consultant, both with large organisations such as Atos, Deloitte and HP and as an independent. Would I say their products are reliable? Not always, no.
I am really looking for a factual technical explanation as to why the published license period is not eventuating (and hopefully a fix!). Maybe you are correct and SAP is losing interest in supporting its consultant community with freebies per se. Sad situation if it is though.
I just recently paid almost NZ$5k for a years sub to the learning hub, if I wish to add specific system accesses for the courses I am doing then I will be adding another 7k to that cost. I rather hope that SAP continue to provide the freebies really
Hey Ross,
my SAP experience hasn't been as long as yours, but let's see.
based on this link: https://store.sap.com/sap/cp/ui/resources/store/html/SolutionDetails.html?pid=0000011590 the list price is a cool $953/month, so adding Amazon would probably double it, unless you would want to juggle their spot instances. a very rough estimate is then about $24K per year.
you would probably be able to negotiate better terms for yourself, but my experience when dealing with large organizations tells me that they might not be particularly interested in individuals. on the other hand, it could simply be a cost of doing business if you could find a client to reimburse those costs to you.
i hope you got your 21 days' worth out of the 'free' access.
cheers,
greg
Hi,
Whenever I find something I want to study, lets say BODS for migration purposes, I now grab an online access from someone like idesremote, might cost me $30 a month for shared access 24/7 with a full developer access. I recently updated my BRF knowledge to BRF+ and did exactly that with a CRM system. I could do all the workbench exercises and all the API based exercises no trouble at all on that system Getting access to the SAP system for the hub would as you say have cost me at least 2 to 3 thou. AND I am pleased to say the support is brilliant and the system 100% reliable
Guess the old adage about there being more than one way to skin a cat certainly applies here.
Cheers,
Ross
Hi Ross,
I have some doubts if this is related to expiring license. You can extend your developer license for an existing instance as explained here:
I recommend however following steps to narrow down potential problem with existing instance :
1. Check if you can connect with HANA Studio - this will allow seeing the status of HANA process
2. If 1) is not possible you would need to establish SSH connection on OS level to the instance as explained in CAL FAQ:
3. Check HANA processes status with the following command:
/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/sapcontrol -nr <Database_System_Number> -function GetProcessList
Please, let me know the result of these steps so that I can recommend proper action here.
Best Regards,
Ventsislav

Hello Ventsislav,
thank you very much for your response,
i followed your instructions, but on point number 3, you say:
/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/sapcontrol -nr <Database_System_Number> -function GetProcessList
How do I know the Database system number? i'm new to all this, and i'm a Little bit confussed...
thank you very much
Hello again,
as you say in other posts: ( http://scn.sap.com/thread/3686808 )
"when your license key expires you can still start your HANA and connect via HANA Studio"
well, then i guess my problem is not that, since i can't connect via SAP HANA Studio.
so, i followed your instructions and was able to execute the command you say in point 3. i don't know how to read the result exactly, but i guess it all seems ok...
any clue on how to proceed next?
anybody knows if there's any way to get direct support from AWS if you have a basic support plan(free), or is it mandatory to get a pay plan?
Thank you very much for your time
Thank you very much for your time, Ventsislav,
so, is it a problem with the SAP developer edition? It has nothing to do with AWS? Or my instance? Is there a chance to continue my work? Or will I have to wait until the release of the newly coming developer edition appliance?
Will I lose my schemas, files etc...allocated in the system?
i have a lot of questions, I know, but it is very important...if there were a chance to get on and not to stay stucked for a couple of weeks...
Thanks for all your support!
