S4 HANA integration with ECC 6.0 EHP 6

Former Member

Hi Experts,

I have recently started taking interest in HANA and specially S4 HANA Cloud Edition which is the talk these days, also, simultaneously designing a solution for one of my clients.

The client i currently running on ECC 6.0 EHP 6 version of SAP R/3 and is keen to explore features and value additions provided by S4 HANA Cloud Edition. I now have a challenge in this area...

  • Is it possible that through some medium I would be able to connect the two systems and make them to talk to each other so that their data stays in the ECC system while leveraging the S4 HANA Cloud applications/solution base?
  • Or may be connect the two system and while they maintain a communication channel, some transitional data is synced to the HANA database while the older data remains on the ECC system?

If yes, request you all to please, kindly point me in the direction of some helpful documentation that can help me with the methodology or at least some theoretical concept around the same.

Any and all the information in this direction would be quite helpful. Looking forward to get some really needed response.

Thanks and Regards,

Abhishek Goel

Hi, I found the following

http://www.saphanaclass.com/2014/12/get-started-with-sap-hana-cloud.html

There is nothing concrete like code examples, however there is something like HCI that you need.

My two-cents on this. Did you check tutorials on openSAP - there are couple of sessions by Rui Noguira on HANA development - probably those sessions might  give you some idea. They deal with actual code level stuff for HANA but not exactly your scenario of (ECC+HANA) integration.

Hi Ashwini,

Thank you very much for your reponse.

I have already been through the sessions/courses you have mentioned but could not find the information I am looking for.

In case there in any other place I should be looking at for this information, please let me know.

Hi Abhishek,

In Vegas I heard from one of the SAP developer that SAP has introduced a connector which connect ECC system to Cloud on HANA and with that your data stays in ECC and you can leverage the HANA DB in cloud.

Not sure, if this address to your question.

Hi, seems you're talking about Central Finance?

No Aleksey, I am not talking about Central finance....Central finance is available on premise.

In TechEd some one from your development team has mentioned that if some one wanted to use the benefit of HANA on cloud then they can use by connecting Cloud to ECC via add on and can leverage the benefit of HANA...not sure how much this statement is valid.

Hi Abhishek,

In my opinion, S4HANA itself is a replacement of ECC as next generation enterprise management.

I don't there is an option to connect the existing ECC to S4HANA cloud.

As per my understanding there is no such offerings from SAP.

This is not new and is around for at least a few years, but might not be something you have formulated in your question. Not to be confused:

1. What you are asking for is a connection between a classic ECC and S4H. This is integration between two ERP systems, one of them being a full-function and the other one that SAP promises will cover a lot of processes (we will need to see that in action, for now it's not much, consult the post S/4 HANA is not actually a new 'Business Suite'... | SCN)

2. What you are not asking for, but might have that in mind is SLT/SRS/DS between existing mature ERP system and a standalone HANA instance for the sake of real-time reporting, etc. This is called a side-by-side scenario and is partially covered by HA300 course and this post HANA Live implementation (sidecar scenario) | SCN

Hope this helps

Hi Abhishek,

I am not sure whether it is possible, but if you want to connect, you will need to connect using the HANA Cloud Connector on your ECC system. This will connect you to HCP and from there you might be able to connect to the S4HANA cloud system.

However, why would you want to connect to S4HANA cloud? S4HANA cloud is supposed to be a replacement for your current system, not an extension.

Hi Sjaak,

Thanks for the response.

I will look into the possibility through HANA Cloud Connector as you have mentioned and see what I can i build around the same. Will update you as well when I find something in case you are interested in that kind of information.

I understand your confusion and I share the same your concern. But the client I am designing the solution for is reluctant in the size of investment if they were to move the entire database to HANA and hence the need for an alternate solution.

Hi Abishek,

What is your customers' request in this case? If your customer is reluctant in to invest in the HANA db, then I suppose you are referring to acquiring the HANA machines? A better option, in this case might be moving you DB to a hosting provider. These will be able to provide a scaleable hosting solution based on a monthly fee, reducing the need for investment. The extra fee that needs to be payed for the HANA licences are due to the fact that you get a Db solution with it. On the other hand, your customer will lose the license costs for the Db that is already installed under the current ECC system.

Besides this, S4HANA cloud might be an alternative, but still only as a complete replacement. What you can do is move to simple finance in the cloud and to a HANA reporting solution in the cloud, to better suit the needs for certain LoB's.

Please keep me informed on your progress. I am very eager to learn more about this.

Thanks Sjaak for your promptness in the replies and appreciate your enthusiasm in the matter.

I will work on the possibilities and alternatives suggested by you and once I have formulated an appropriate solution, will surely share the same with you.

Thank you once again for your inputs .

Thanks for the reply Priscilia.

But the blog you directed me towards still does not clearly discusses the possibility of getting the two systems to communicate to each other. What I am looking for is a more concrete evidence of the solution to implement a mechanism where I could make S4HANA system to talk to our old ECC 6.x system.
