Ram,

Since you are running an much older SP2 you will need to do it in stages due to major changes.

First - Suggest upgrading to SP4 &/or SP5 ( Suggest SP5)

Second - Final upgrade to SP7

Ram,

You should first test the risks in DEV first.

Suggest:

  • Dev take full back-up of your BOE XI 3.1 w/ SP2 server
  • Upgrade to SP5, then test key WebI / Crystal / DeskI / .... Objects
  • If all good.... Take another back-up
  • Upgrade to SP7, then do final test of all Objects
  • If all works with No Risk then you can do in PROD Cluster.

PROD

  • Take full back-up of Cluster Servers
  • Upgrade to SP5, first CMS ( DO NOT STOP / RESTART SERVER )
  • Then Second CMS, cluster , . ..  ( DO NOT STOP / RESTART SERVER )
  • When all servers within cluster done, do end-to-end test
  • Take full back-up of Cluster Servers
  • Finally Upgrade to SP7, first CMS ( DO NOT STOP / RESTART SERVER )
  • Then Second CMS, cluster , . ..  ( DO NOT STOP / RESTART SERVER )
  • When all servers within cluster done, do end-to-end test
  • You are now LIVE

Do you have a DEV / QA / SANDBOX environment to test first !!!

Ram,

Here is just a quick example of what you can do?

Crystal

- View / Refresh / Print / Schedule / Publish

WebI

- View / Refresh / Edit / Create / Print / Schedule / Publish

DeskI

- View / Refresh / Print / Schedule / Schedule / Publish

Xcelius / Dashboards

- View / Refresh / Print

- How long have been using BOE XI 3.1.7 ?

- What kind of reports are you using ?

You can also install Mobile Add-On for FREE on the server and view content using Tablet / Smart Phone.

Regards,

Ajay

Means, If I do install patch 5 and then 7 on client machine it will effect only to me right. how we can install on servers?

Can you please explain me how to do in Dev, QA, Prod.

Ex: I need to install fresh copy of 3.1 w sp3 and update with sp5 finally 7. This is correct..?

This will apply same steps for all the servers right. ?

I'm sorry, can you please explain me the procedure to upgrade Servers and Tools.

Ram,

That is CORRECT.  You need FIRST update all the SERVER components and using InfoView.  Then you would upgrade the CLIENT tools another end-to-end test using the client tools.

This way if you have issues after the SERVERS are upgraded using InfoView then you can restore from back-up.

You can update in your client machine with SP7, It will not affect servers. It is not recommnded.

but you will see issues, if both server and client tools are not in same pacth level.

You can go to control panel and add remove programs, you can check which version is installed.

Ram,

You can always download 90-day trial copy on Windows 2003 &/0r 2008 for testing purpose.  If you launch the client tool and look for about, you should build #

Sever install need to be done on server, not client OS.

You cannot install same version of BO in the same server, you can install BO 3.1 and 4.1 in same server for testing purpose, but not 3.1 SP3 and 3.1 SP7

Jawahar,

How to create a Sandbox Server First. Is there any steps to follow.

Follow above Ajay's suggestions.

Build a complete new server. migrate some sample reports to test on a new server. Verify the upgrade.

Or if you want to replicate current existing environment, use below links.

You cannot apply SP7 directly on top of SP3. First you need to go to SP5 and SP7. Test in a sand box first and apply in production.

Q#2: I amo not sure different servers webi, crystal and CMC? Did you have clustered environment where webi servers in one , crystal in one and CMS server in one?

Hi Jawahar,

Thanks for your help.

Yes, Its been maintained Cluster and its distributed all tools with multiple servers.

Why do you want to combine it to one? That was done for specific reason. if all the servers are in one server, it may not perform as expected depending on your usage.

You right, Due to reducing server cost company need to make it under one Server.
