Questions regarding SAP Afaria (MDM/MAM) for managing native iOS/Android Apps

Hy

We are in a concept phase including a PoC for a customer.

Current situation of customer:

- WCF Service

- Mobile Client (Industrial Hardware, Windows Mobile 6, SQL CE) connected to the WCF Service, with offline capabilities

- Sybase Afaria (Now SAP Afaria) for MDM of the Windows Mobile 6 Clients for example for starting background jobs on the device

For the PoC we have created the following:

- New REST Service (Reusing all the same Business Logic like the WCF Service)

- New Mobile Client (with Xamarin, Xamarin.Forms) reusing the Business Logic as a native iOS and Android App with offline capabilities

My Questions:
- Does SAP Afaria allows me to remotely start an application (on iOS, Android), for example if the app was force-quite by the user?

- Is SAP Mobile Secure the same as SAP Afaria, but hosted in the cloud?

Why I ask this question:

- We need a way to remote start a background job (part of the native application) even if the user has quit the application.

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Peter

Peter,

In answer to question one, I am making the assumption you mean the user terminated the app from running, and it is still located on the device.  Afaria does not have a way of launching the application so it is in memory.

Thanks

Hy Tracy

Thanks for your answer. Yes this was the question, if it is possible to start the application from remote when the user quits the application.

Kind regards,

Peter

Peter,

Unfortunately that is not a feature of Afaria.  As Sushmitha mentioned above, Afaria is the on-premise version of Mobile Secure.  I would submit a product enhancement request at http://ideas.sap.com under the Mobile catagory.  While I cannot say that any idea will be implemented, this lets product management know that customers are interested in certain features.

Dear Peter,

1. Once the app has been pushed to the device/user, it sits in the Afaria client till the app is installed on the device. If the user uninstalled the app on the device, you can still see the app in the Mobile Place(Afaria Cloud version) under the apps list to be installed.

But here your query is bit confusing!! How can you remotely start an application if the app is not installed on the device? Please clarify your query here.

2. Yes, Mobile Secure is the Afaria cloud version. It is same as Afaria on-Prem with Enterprise access availability instead of Relay server and some additional features included.

Please take a look at this doc for further reference http://help.sap.com/Download/Multimedia/pdf-mobilesecure/Mobile_Secure_Administration_Guide.pdf

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Sushmitha
