Creating a Universe (in IDT) using an External Restful WebService

Hello everyone,

Can we create a Universe (in IDT) using an external Restful webservice (API) which returns data that was coded using JSON? If yes, can someone help me?

FYI: I don't know any other language apart from SQL, that is why my question may be little off. I'm seeking help from a colleague who knows Java, he'll create the webservice, I need to create the Universe.

I saw this blog, which uses WSDL and that doesn't help me much as I tried to enter that webservice URL and got an error, Connection to <webservice> refused.

Thanks,
Mahboob Mohammed

A/A Nouman,

No, I didn't get an answer to this and I'll come back to it when it becomes a priority, that project is on hold currently.

Thanks,

Hey Amit,

The Picture from bullet 8 in the link you sent me, seems to say that, Universe is the source and Your (or Our Application) is the destination. In other words, we can get the data in Our application with Universe as source by connecting to the universe using the BI Universe connector. But, that's not what I was looking for.

We have an External Restful Webservice (not from BO) and I need to use that as the source and create a Universe on top of that, so I can retrieve data from it. We don't want to create our own WebService in BO.

Does that make sense?

Edition to this reply:

For a min, lets forget what my real requirement is and lets Create a Universe on top of a Web Service as per the blog. I tried to do so, but I cannot get that to work either for some reason. I've BO 4.1 SP5 Patch 3 Client tools installed (base install). I entered the same sample WSDL URL as specified, but I still get an error with a window called Test Failed and the message in it is www.webservicex.net. Am I doing something wrong here? Did anyone try to recreate that sample universe from the blog?

Thanks for your help,
Mahboob Mohammed

Hi Amit,

Isn't the link you gave talking about exposing BO data to others via WebServices? "The SAP BusinessObjects BI Universe Connector is a Web Service API allowing applications to connect to Universe data and metadata..."

That is not what I'm looking for, we want to create a Universe using data from a RESTful WebService (data is in JSON format) as source. Can you please help? The Guides, don't help much as its like French for me. Should I be using the Generic driver -> OData Connector to achieve this? He/she said that in the below discussion.
