HANA Migration from a Compressed Oracle Database

Hi Everyone,

We are planning to migrate our ECC environment from Oracle To HANA. Below are the details of our current environment:

Oracle:11.2.0.3.0

DB Size: 1.5 TB

We are planning to compress our Database first using OLTP TABLE compression and then migrate it to HANA.

I am confused with below line in note#1793345 - Sizing for SAP Suite on HANA

An assumption is that your source system is well-maintained and uncompressed

Please suggest if we are good to compress our database before migrating it to HANA or is there any issue when migrating compressed database to HANA.

Why would you still want to compress the database before the migration? To me that doesn't really make sense.

I assume the statement is there because the sizing guidelines (or scripts) don't take this compression into account. If you have a compressed database before migrating to SAP HANA, your compression rate moving from anyDB to SAP HANA will be lower.

I assume that means if we move our database from Oracle to HANA then our new database will be in more compress form.

Please suggest upto how much extent we can get the compression ratio. like for DB size 1.5 TB

Yes, if you migrate your exisitng DB to HANA, then your new HANA DB will be in complressed format.

The compression ratio cannot be calucated exactly. It depends on the many factors and type of the Application that you are migrating.  But however, according to my understanding you can expect 1:4 or 1:6 ~ compression ratio.
